Elliot Anderson | Opening bid rejected (p189)

If there were ever a "I feel like I'm taking crazy pills" player it's Declan Rice. Nothing against the guy what so ever. Seems like a genuinely solid bloke. More than happy to see him as a mainstay of the England side. Also surprisingly for a key player of a rival side I don't find him to be a completely insufferable twat..

But he is... fine. He strikes a good dead ball. He's very athletic and he gets about well. Doesn't seem to get injured often. He doesn't seem to have a particularly above average football IQ, can't play with his back to goal, doesn't seem to possess any great level of raw skill. He's just.. dependable. Which is great, but the way some corners are going on about him you would think he's on the same level as peak Rodri or Yaya.

Agree, technically he isn't amazing, but his out of possession work is fantastic for them.

This...exactly.
When we play Arsenal, the gap between him and Rodri is clearly quite significant - Rodri's positional sense, technique, control and tactical acumen are hugely superior. BUT, Rice's physicality makes him a very valuable player even though he is short of the very best in other areas. Rice alongside Rodri would be immense. Instead of Rodri, not good enough. Anderson is a different player but technically better than the latter and just as physical. He will be a big asset if he comes. I would like us to bring Isiah Dada-Mascoll in to the squad for cup games - he is the nearest to Rodri that I have seen in terms of that sense of always being in the right place, offering for the ball, and giving it wisely. Of course, he is not Rodri...yet.

I see more Yaya than Rodri with Isaiah.

think you're being a tad oversensitive. it was more highlighting how the comment on rice was a little unfair.
I seriously don’t think it’s unfair. I honestly see a limited player who cost north of £100m. As shown throughout his career he needs someone to hold his hand unlike Fernandinho or Rodri who are galaxies above Rice and can perform the holding role on their own.

The Rags are not paying £100mill+ for him either.

They are under new and more frugal owners now, and a financial plan, with you know who as their CEO.

i simply said, fairly light heartedly, that your over simplified description of Rice "plod about, take set pieces and wave his arms about to gee up the crowd" was harsh and could be a applied to even a great like KDB. and it could.

its not a fair or complete description of either player though.

KDB did take set pieces
KDB used to wave his arms to gee up the crowd and the team.
the only contentious bit is plod about. i'm fairly certain their ground coverage per match would be similar.

yes kdb has a better attacking footballing brain but that wasn't in your description.

i've never been a fan of rice. but he has clearly made a difference to the asterisk team.

anyway i'm not prepared to die on a hill that i could care less about

“There is a sense at Forest that if there is a big sale this summer it will be Anderson, and a fine World Cup with England would put them in a stronger bargaining position.”

Three comments on this BBC insight…
1. England are going to do shit in the World Cup with Tuchel’s selection, so it’s unlikely any England players will catch the eye.
2. City should insist on doing business before World Cup.
3. I wouldn’t pay £100m for Anderson.
