I love listening to full albums as I think they tell a story. However, there are so many albums out there that have 2-3 good tunes on and the rest is utter shite, so I thought it would be great to make a thread for people looking to listen to an album of bands that they do not know too well but the album from start to finish is pure brilliance. Please state the band/group and album along with genre and a description if you like. The reason for stating genre is that long time bands can create great albums but have completely changed genre. Please don't pollute the thread with negative comments about bands. The underlying rule is the album has to be pure brilliance and you never have the feeling to skip a tune So for me off the top of my head....

Megadeth - Rust in Peace (Thrash Metal) - This is the pinnacle of guitar riffage for me coinciding with Marty Friedman's crazy solo brilliance. After track two finishes you need a big breath and are on a new ride.

Muse - Origin of Symmetry (Alternative Rock) - This album is brilliant from start to finish. So many great tunes and they are all slightly different in genre which makes it a good listen.

Dream Theater - Train of Thought (Progressive Metal) - Starts with the "Pop" song of the album and then goes into a complete masterclass of progressive metal. The penultimate track is Stream of Consciousness and I challenge anybody to find a better instrumental anywhere.

Quite simply one of the best albums of this century. They burnt so brightly on this record, blending everything from hard rock to psychobilly. The album is 26 minutes long and like nothing else before or since. They were the real deal.

A few years later they were on tour with Queens of The Stone Age, and were thrown off the tour for being too ‘intense’ shall we say.

Legendary band and comfortably one of the greatest live acts I ever bore witness too.

Fun fact. A young Edgar Wright directed the video for Psychosis Safari.

Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures - probably only listen a few times a year but not the type you'd skip tracks.

And PF, I'd add Chameleons - Strange Times as one I listen all the way through too.

KLF - Chill Out. Never skip any tracks.

There are very few albums I can listen to start to finish in one go. Can count them on one hand. I watch with interest what others say.

Van Halen-Van Halen

and honourable mentions to the third Peter Gabriel album (Scratch), which is only let down by it's closing track. The Godawful Biko, and The Police's Synchronicity. Some find Miss Gradenko and Mother a hard listen

There's a riot going on: Sly and the family stone.

Also Brat, Charlie XCX.

Slightly different genres.

Not an easy one to think of all in a short space of time, but off the top of mu head these are albums i consider to be solid the whole way through and importantly stand up as a single piece of work....im sure ill think of more

The Charlatans - Some Friendly. Madchester, baggy, indie pop

Guns n Roses - Appetite For Destruction. Hard rock, rock n roll, "metal"

Manchester Orchestra - Black Mile to the Surface. American indie, alt-rock

Turnstile - Never Enough....and Glow On. Modern american hardcore, alternative rock

Pink Floyd - Animals, The Wall, DSOTM, Wish you were here. Classic rock

ACDC - If you want blood, you got it. Heavy rock, rock n roll, classic rock.....live album btw

Ride - Nowhere...and Going Black Again. 90s british shoegaze, indie

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - BRMC. American garage rock, alternative

Fighting With Wire - Man vs Monster. 2000's alternative, emo, heavy rock/punk

Noel Gallagher - Chasing Yesterday. Indie, classic rock/pop, britpop

Spiritualized - Lazer Guided Melodies. Indie, shoegaze, psychedelic, space rock

Oasis - Definitely Maybe and WTSMG. Britpop, rock

I started listening via Radio Caroline and Luxembourg, so it was just songs at first, but as I got into bands I started to appreciate listening to full albums. Now it is a mix. I was born in the fifties and therefore been through lots of eras and trends. The music I loved in the late 1960s and early-mid 70s still gets played a lot, but I have also found some music that rings my bell since the turn of the century. I admit there were a couple of decades 1980- 2000, where there wasn’t much I liked. I hated the electronic stuff at the time but listening back now some of the songs weren’t bad. I am heavily involved with a band I first discovered in 2009, but having forged many friendships with band and followers alike, we still disagree about what is great and what is crap.

In essence, just enjoy what you like, by all means share with friends (that is how I discovered the music I love and the music I hate) but don’t push it and don’t take offence if they hate it.

Im a bit of a music obsessive, having played in bands for years...and still continue to write and produce (admittedly primarily as a hobby now)....but what give me the greatest pleasure of all, is when my son or daughter text me a link to a song, or ask what i think about "insert name of band".....thats what i truly love :-)

I agree, but don’t find Biko at all godawful and think Mother is a bit tough but like Miss Gradenko quite a bit. The first Police record nearly makes the cut save for Be My Girl.

This is always tough because variety is the spice of life and so tempo/tone/style changes in a great record are sometimes what make a record great. One person’s filler is another person’s genius. I’d like to think all the records I like best and would rate 10/10 (or even 9/10) have no songs I dislike. There must be at least 50-75 records I know that meet that standard. Over on the album thread I postulated that any record with a song you’d skip can’t be higher than an 8 (and got a lot of pushback for that view).

Some people might consider “Polly” or “Something In The Way” on Nevermind “filler” but I think they add a lot to the tone (one is funny, the other wistful).

But since my favo(u)rite record of all time is Gang of Four’s “Entertainment!”, I’ll go with that one.
