3 | Ruben Dias - 2025/26

he’ll know himself that he’s no longer too of the pecking order.

It's fans who think Dias deserves to be benched.

He has been 1st choice since his arrival, the only permanent presence in our defence since 2020, and last season was no different when he was fit. He's 29, not 35.

That said, Dias is sufficiently intelligent to understand that fans may prefer other defenders, who are younger and are expected to get better. He knows he can play for top teams overseas, so it's logical he might want to go.

But that could happen if Gvardiol signs a new contract, and preferably Rodri too. Leadership is crucial to any team challenging for titles, and Dias has been a leader of one of the best teams ever. I'm fairly certain our club bosses want him to stay.

That’s perfectly reasonable too. I just think the stars are aligning.

We’ll see.

I find it all very frustrating tbh. I felt like CB was the only area of the pitch that we had sorted. Gvardiol, Guehi, Dias, Khusanov was a perfect 4, then you keep someone like Alleyne around to be 5th choice, letting Reis have a PL loan. But then it’s dropped on us that Gvardiol and Dias might leave ffs.

Seems all a little weird.
We had a similar situation last season, seemingly having a surpus of centre halves, some of them very experienced.
We loaned out Alleyne, Simpson Pusey, Bah , Reis to get experience and also Akanji.
A few months later we had a CB crisis, brought back Alleyne and by the New Year had to buy Guehi, loaning out Mfuni who then got injured.
Akanji and Stones now departed permanently and Ake, Gvardiol and Dias future at City up in the air?

City have had the opinion since the takeover that if a player wants to leave, and the club receives an acceptable offer, the player can leave. Can't see it being any different with Dias. He's been brilliant for us, but if his mind is elsewhere, let him go.

Maresca may rate Dias above our current first choice CB's. Stick around until at least January is the best scenario. And to be honest Arsenal's central defenders aren't the quickest.

Assuming Maresca plays an inverted full back to sit alongside Rodri and pushes the remaining defensive 3 up the pitch is Dias thinking he can't do that any more ? Its pretty much the way we have played except pushing Stones up into midfield instead of the full back on occasion but maybe having seen the development of Khusanov he does not fancy the competition. Do think we are better on defending set pieces with him in the side but does not give us much from an attacking sense. Mourinho with a flat back 4 and couple holding in midfield (assuming thats how he goes) a better system for him possibly. Would rather see him stay at least another year personally.

I expect a huge turnover of players this summer and I wouldn't blame a lot of players who will see the new boss whoever it maybe as a downgrade. I trust Hugo to find solid, cheaper long term replacements.

You wouldn't blame a lot of players? Really? They play for Manchester City not Guardiola city. If they down tools or ask to leave it tells you a lot about their character. Nothing to suggest this is going to happen by the way.

They’re professionals. Sometimes professionals want to change their job or working environment.

True but it would be foolish to not think that some players main reason to join City was to play under Guardiola

Yes. Or they believe Maresca will play a different system or they will be sidelined for other favorites. We can’t say we want hungry players and then be mad when they want to go somewhere else to be a guaranteed more playing time. A Dias who didn’t want to start every game probably wouldn’t be the Dias we appreciate. I don’t think it’s a sign of a poor character to want to play more. Unfortunately I think there was more interest/willingness in being 2nd/3rd string under Pep than probably any other manager.

I think we should sell. Someone has to go if Reis is in the squad next season.

Gvardiol and Guehi is our best pairing. Dias at best will be 3rd choice. He's 29...on big wages and I thought he took a step back this season.

Fabulous defender for 2-3 years. Still very good, although i think was made to suffer by Pep's obsession with sloooooowwwwwwwwww possession, less mid and attacking pressing and suicidal high lines in the last 2 years. I hope we have him here next year. Gvardiol, Guehi, Dias, Khus is quality. Not sure how you play them all enough..but we need 4 centre backs i think.
