Elliot Anderson | Opening bid rejected (p189)

In hindsight we should have bought MGW and not bothered with Reijnders who clearly doesn’t have the energy required in the PL.
I completely disagree with this. I have a mate who goes to Forest every week and last summer I remember him saying how he would quite like to sell gibbs-white as he does so many annoying flicks that never come off and he constantly gives the ball away. He thought that he was quite easily replaceable for 60m. Obviously he's had a decent year this season but ultimately I think we'd just be having the same conversation as we do with Reijnders now if he was here. Maybe I'll be proven wrong but he's not city calibre and probably never will be.

Good point. If we start discarding players after one season, or even 18 months, it signals that you don’t really know what you’re doing, and that hardly sends a reassuring signal to those players you’re trying to sign.
As disappointed as we all were in him vs his output prior to the transfer... he has undeniable tools. Almost wonder if playing as an alternative to Erl in a false 9... as a 10 with either Foden or Cherki wider? Don't feel like he's suited to playing much deeper. IDK, just spitballing. My hope is he'll bed in, have a great summer and find his way. WC competition won't hurt his development.

Equally if we keep them it could also show we don't know what we're doing.

I think aside from the challenge of stepping up to the PL and playing in Peps system... Reindeer struggled this year as we had no steel in midfield. He's no hard man and requires support. Rodri was stop start never got fully back and Nico G got doghoused. It was undeniably the Achilles heel of our season.

The body of evidence suggests to the contrary. We’ve only dropped one clanger in recent years, so I’m willing to be patient. Patience and trust in our processes have been fundamental to our success.

What's "the body of evidence". Look at Chelsea for the proof of holding onto players that aren't going to make shows you don't know what you're doing.

Having patience is nothing to do with what we're talking about. We're talking about players that clearly aren't going to make it with us and holding onto them too long will make it look like we don't know what we're doing. Hence the decline since 22/23

Our transfer signings. Our problem was not commencing the rebuild earlier and hoping that an aging squad could maintain its dominance when the football environment was being changed. It’s become apparent, however, that it takes longer than was the case for players to get up to speed with the physical demands of playing in England.

We’ve spent eighteen months assembling the next squad and came surprisingly close in the League and put two pots in the cupboard. The defence and the attack have been rebuilt, and all that is missing now is more dynamism and running power in the midfield. Anderson should add significantly to that.

I’m prepared to wait and see what next season brings, but out of curiosity, which specific players are you jettisoning and with whom are they being replaced?

Therein lies the problem. In modern day PL you have to be the steel or at the very least have the bollocks to try to be the steel.

The English tax on players it's crazy not saying his isn't a good player but is he worth the guts of 100 million pounds for me maybe not but it's not my money.

Definitely worth it, just like we’d be sat here now as champions again if we’d paid whatever it took to get Rice and change his mind about only wanting Arsenal.

Let’s not repeat that lack of ambition by balking at a transfer fee and letting rags or scousers snap up a player we so desperately need. Someone with energy in midfield.

Rice didn’t want to come, the fee was ridiculous and he’s not good enough.
