My German teacher was from Dresden. She spoke to us about how people literally turned into piles of ash.
She detested what the DDR became under Communist rule. And she ripped the head off me once when I responded to a question with “jawohl” rather than “ja”, my then fifteen-year-old self not understanding the militaristic undertones of such a response.
Best teacher I ever had - absolute disciplinarian who had total command of the class.
