Elliot Anderson | Opening bid rejected (p189)

Rice, Jude and Paqueta say other wise, but you're welcome to your opinion.
We didn’t go for Paqueta because of his betting scandal. Bellingham wasn’t coming to City with his Liverpool fan of a dad whispering in his ear. We didn’t want to enter a bidding war for Rice, we wouldn’t even have bid if we didn’t have some sort of agreement on personal terms.

We're discussing the standard of players being in decline, not the trophies we're winning.

We've gone from Kev, Gundo, prime Bern, prime Stones, Walker, pre-ACL Rodri, on fire Foden, Sanè, Sterling, etc to the players we have now.
No we didn’t we built that team and those players into their prime, just as we will build this team and these young players into a very good team. Will it win trebles or 4 in a row probably not because those things aren’t normal. We will win things and challenge for all the trophies though.
Comparing the team now to the team that took years to reach that level immediately is just daft., and asking to be disappointed while still winning stuff, just as we did this season. Though some seem to enjoy the doom and gloom more.

Exactly. KDB for example developed over the years with us - he didn’t come ready made - ask Phil Thompson :-) :-)

The rot started with the 115. Players we wanted wouldn't come here or were placed under threat of a ban.

The PL for the most part even if it can't prove the 115 have done serious damage to the club's reputation.
Some on here are in denial but this is of course true.

We are still considered as one of the best clubs in the world and that will still be attractive to the vast majority of players (not to mention we obviously pay our players high salaries). Players from clubs like Bournemouth, Palace, Lyon and so on will obviously even with these charges still prefer to take a chance and join one of the best clubs in the world rather than stay on a lot less money in their current club. Haaland can of course sign a long contract since he is already here and knows that if the worst scenario happens he will have plenty of options to move anyway.

But for the very top players around that has more or less every top club in europe after them, us having the 115 case hanging over us is undoubtedly a negative factor if/when they are deciding which of City/Liverpool/Barcelona/Real Madrid/Bayern Munich/PSG to join. Not necessarily a deciding factor, but a factor nonetheless.
Would be foolish to believe anything else, it's just common sense.

Hopefully we are soon cleared from all this BS that has undoubtedly caused damage to the clubs reputation.

Pep chose KP over Rice. By the time we realised it was a mistake Arsenal had Rice all lined up.

Paqueta didn’t snub us we changed our mind after the betting scandal.

JB went to Real Madrid. Real Madrid will always have the most pulling power….although we did very well to get Haaland over them.

Perhaps you should have used Wirtz as an example but then I doubt 115 had much to do with it.

We will never know but we couldn’t have done much better trophy wise with the players we signed with or without 115 so I don’t get you point, it seems very random and flies in the face of the sponsorship deals we have signed over the years.

I think it was Paqueta over Rice. We already had Rodri and everyone including me thought Rice plus Rodri should be the way to go but Txiki planned for Rodri plus Paqueta. Paqueta falls off while Arsenal go all in for Rice and reasonably Rice chose them plus the asking price was too high esp after we have already splurged 100m on Grealish.

Jude and there maybe more in the future where the parents have a soft side for the "history" clubs. Hence given a chance these players would try to go these clubs. Wasn't there a news about one of JB's parents is Liverpool supporter. Give it another 10-15 years we would be part of the "history" clubs as well.

Wirtz one is weird. Why go to Slot's Liverpool when you had an option for Bayern and Pep's City.

With England flying out today I assume we will have to wait until July now to get this one done.

Shame as was hoping we could get it sorted before the World Cup but I guess was never that likely given forest owner

Hmm, felt like we needed to get this sorted before the WC. That ships sailed and as we still havent even announced Maresca my confidence in this deal actually happening has largely evaporated.

Wirtz's decision was bizarre. I assume he's galactically thick.

Considering the timing, perfectly understandable.

To anybody looking in from the outside, Liverpool had just strolled to the title under a brand-new coach, so presumably some sort of managerial continuity looked on the cards. They were splashing out left, right and centre to consolidate this 'superiority'. In contrast, City looked in disarray after a season of abject performances and Pep's mid- to long-term future looked very uncertain.

It probably looked an even better decision watching Al-Hilal dump us out of the CWC...

With Iraola Anfield-bound, Wirtz' might look to be an even better choice by this time next year? They surely can't be as bad again.

Because of what? As long as he's here before 11pm on September 1st it's fine.
"Sigh" - wait and see what happens if he has a half decent World Cup. Which given England are in yet another Mickey Mouse group itll be hard not to shine in some of those games. Price will then go even higher, and other big fish from overseas will look at signing him thus making it somewhat harder to complete a deal.

We went for Paqueta after we went for Rice
