Frank Carrodus and Tony Towers

I liked Tony Towers and was sorry we let him go. I say I liked him. I have to say that wasn't universal. He got the same stick as Ian Bowyer. We had an elderly element of Maine Road blue (we still have) for whom certain players can do no right. Ian Mellor was another victim. I was really pleased Bowyer won the European Cup and Towers won England caps. But there were city attendees that really only seemed to enjoy assassinating our players particularly home grown.

There's always been an element of our support who just have to have a scapegoat. It's a mentality I'll never understand. It's been there as long back as I can remember. Big Joe got stick off the fans when he first got into the team. Then, as you said, Bowyer and Towers copped in for abuse. Fast forward to Edghill, who got shameful treatment off a section of our fanbase. Now; well, it seems to be Lewis, Savinho and Reijnders who are getting the scapegoat treatment. Okay; not every player will turn out like Kev, Vinnie, Sergio, Dave etc. But that doesn't justify the abuse they get, particularly on here.

Tony Towers nickname “Growler” you always need one in you midfield!! Apart from being tough and getting stuck in could play a bit as well!! Frank was a cultured ball playing winger, probably a bit lightweight to go to the top?

I was going to say the exact same thing about Frank (cultured, but lightweight), and he struck me as a young Tommy Hutchinson type player.

He seemed like a slightly younger Gerry Gow, but a better player than Gerry.

Sorry for the ancient references, but I’m trying to speak to the type of players we had around back then, as neither of them would get a sniff today, given the quality we have in the squad.

Tony Towers scored what was for many years, the best goal that I ever saw live at a City match. It was at West Brom away on a Wednesday night division 1 fixture about 1973 I think, a 30 yard howitzer the keeper never sniffed it. Will always remember that as an 11 year old stood on the terrace gobsmacked by the power and distance he mustered.
