Fixtures Calendar - 2026/27

Either get rid or do what the original plan of the PL was, and take it down to 18 teams.
You can have 2 cup competitions and 18 PL teams or you can have 20 PL teams but only 1 cup competition (like everyone else). In fact, I’d actually do both and have one cup and 18 PL teams but I’d have 4 relegated and promoted every season.
Agree with you - but "turkeys don't vote for Xmas".
An 18 team PL solves so many of the problems but will NEVER get past a vote, and impacts revenues from broadcast deals.
Like many things, in what was our beautiful game, it's a shit show (a tv shit show)

Don't agree with getting rid, but I agree with European teams not taking part these days.
I've actually suggested previously that, as it's the League Cup, maybe it should just be EFL teams - can you imagine the kick off though with teams not getting the chance to play at PL stadiums???
There's also complications around European spots - if some teams are excluded you'd have to remove the European qualification for the winners (uefa aren't letting that one fly for a start)
UEFA wouldn't be too fussed whether or not the League Cup winner gets a European place. How the European places for English clubs are allocated is down to the FA in conjunction with the PL and EFL. That Europa Conference slot would just get allocated to the next place in the PL table if a change was made. The bigger issue is whether or not any PL clubs would be interested if no European place was on offer.

The winners of the Scottish League Cup went into the UEFA Cup up until the 1990s until the Scottish FA decided to reallocate that place so it was based on league table performance.

All this 18 team League is not for the Premier League, there’s currently 380 games per season, that would drop to 306 games or almost 24.2% of the total. The League’s revenues would be significantly affected, not up to the actual percentage level but it would have an effect.

It really wouldn’t affect revenue, in the slightest, even if that was the priority. I’m far more interested in player welfare and quality of the football on offer and they’d both be improved by dropping to 18 teams and losing the league cup.
As for the teams, half of them would be playing in Europe!

Also, the Conference Cup needs fucking off, Chelsea will be delighted they finished 1 point behind Brighton to miss out this year. It’s just an unnecessary hindrance, their CL aspirations are increased this coming season by not having to schlep all over Europe to win a proper two bob cup that was brought in to increase UEFA’s coffers. I know West Ham and Palace kind of embraced it but it’s proper shit competition.
What purpose would that serve?

Would it reduce congestion for anyone?

I was delighted to go the Vienna for the former Cup Winners Cup final in 1970. No doubt you would have turned your nose up at that one?

This is similar to the calls to scrap the League Cup

This arrogance displayed by certain City 'supporters' makes me think of United fans of 25 years back.

The 2 issues that should be dropped are the shit international breaks. Play mid week if we must have meaningless friendlies and shit predictable qualifiers (Except Italy) or bin Thursday nights all Uefa competitions Tues/Wednesday only. It'll never happen because TV is deemed more important than Match goers and player welfare.

There’s a clue in the word, Cup Winners Cup, going back then I think we had three representatives in Europe not 9 as in next season.

I’ve never called for the League cup to be scrapped, any team can draw any other team so it can and often is a strong competition. I’d bin the 2 legged semi’s though. In the conference league there’s a lot of shite matches even into the knock out stages, plenty of dead rubbers. Keep it by all means but redefine who plays in it otherwise it’s a means for teams finishing around half way and below.

Wouldn’t affect revenue in the slightest with 74 games less in total?

I agree on player welfare but reducing PL games would give UEFA the green light to expand their competitions, a new tin pot trophy and 10 games in the CL qualifiers, which is what they wanted before the current 8 games was agreed, don’t give those cunts any opportunity to take the piss.
