Makerfield By - Election. Burnham v Reform

Another reform candidate already utterly out of his depth. A deluded Green candidate removed from reality and chuff all in between, Burnham is truely the shining best of a very sorry bunch, what an insult to our kids to have this new low in leadership. I hope he gets in for everyone's sake. Reform are simply reinvented NF.

Could be deliberate? Perhaps Farage thinks putting up a brickbrain will install Burnham as a weaker opponent than Starmer as PM, given the left will congregate around him and Reform will be able to sharpen their war on welfare attack.
Exactly. Starmer is the ultimate don’t scare the horses candidate that allows small c conservatives to vote Lib Dem and split the right wing vote. Burnham will be another Corbyn, popular with the party faithful but absolutely no chance of winning an election.

If Burnham is “truely the best of a very sorry bunch” what a sorry state of affairs.

If Burnham is “truly the best of a very sorry bunch” what a sorry state of affairs.
He is arguably a less inspiring speaker and indeed personality than Starmer. Swapping these two to please the unions together with a minority of left wing MPs could prove a massive blunder and result in a Reform government. There are many who think Burnham is primarily in the business of self-promotion and his pitch about reversing 40 years of Labour policy completely bogus.

You are crediting the **** with far more strategic acumen than he possesses. Winning this seat would be huge for Reform and Burnham will improve Labour’s electoral prospects.

I agree with the thrust of the post however I have heard it said swapping Starmer for Burnham would be the same as shitting your pants & changing your hat.

I don’t think he is, remember this is the guy (Farage) who orchestrated the Brexit movement, dangerous to underestimate the opposition

That's not what we hear on the doorstep. People are scathing about Keir Starmer, some beside themselves with absolute fury. Only the loathing people had for Jeremy Corbyn comes close. But when you ask why, the vast majority don't seem to know beyond "he's a liar" or cold weather payments.

This is driven day after day by the media and particularly the right-wing media. A female Reform voter from Makerfield was asked on Radio 4 yesterday about Farage's £5 million donation. She immediately started talking about Starmer's free glasses, asking is he any better.

Is Starmer worse than Boris Johnson, Liz Truss or Rishi Sunak? Hardly, but the constant drip of negativity from the Mail and the Telegraph, amongst others, right-wing publicity-hungry agitators like Farage, Robinson and Fox and the social media hellscape deliver this vitriol directly into people's houses day in, day out.

Andy Burnham, on the other hand, is generally well-received and lauded by a large number of people on the doorstep and would be likely to win most by-elections.

Burnham v Robert Kenyon is surely the biggest mismatch in political history but there are still a lot of people willing the latter on, largely for their own nefarious reasons.

Agree with the first part, although this candidate is so thick he'll probably lose it which is why I disagree with your second part. Burnham is not up to being PM.
I do not understand where all this “King of the North” schtick comes from. We are talking a failed Minister here. I doubt he is referred to as King in Staffordshire, think the pseudonym was Bodybags. ;)

The fact that we are discussing Burnham as left wing once again illustrates quite how far the Overton window has shifted in my lifetime.

At one level this is all irrelevant though because until a sufficient number of people in the country decide that our problems stem from the increase in wealth inequality and are prepared to back politicians credibly focused on reversing that trend then we will remain in decline.

An economy where a small number of people can extract or hoard none productive wealth quicker than the economy can create growth (let alone find a way to distribute it effectively) will continuously erode living standards for the majority of people. Ignoring the moral side of it for a moment, a fairer society isn't necessarily a political issue its an economic one. We're locked in an economic death spiral and until we as a population decide that's no longer acceptable, all the likes of Starmer or Burnham can do is shuffle a few deckchairs.

I get what you are saying, but surely our vicious tax system is exacerbating the situation. The tax burden, when you take into account indirect taxation is the highest on “working people” since the war. The freezing of the personal allowance first implemented by the useless Tories has been extended by this shower until 2030. Nearly everything people buy qualifies for VAT, this kind of tax hits the lower paid because it represents a larger percentage of their spending power. We need a radical rethink on all this, anybody thinking body bags Burnham can deliver is delusional.
