24 | Joško Gvardiol - 2025/26

Reading the last page of this thread just reminded me why this place is a fucking shit show in the closed season.
Seriously. The only thing he has said is that he’s happy at City. And now all the other rumors are being taken as fact. And now it’s transitioned to, “he’s not good enough and has a weak mentality.” God, we can be awful.

(On a side note , I seriously don’t understand how wanting to go to a place where you’re a guaranteed starter in your favored position is “weak” but so be it…did we want him to be happy to sit on the bench?)

Last four words probably weren't needed! Haha!
Oscar Bobb became a world beater and balon'dor contender in his absence whereas it looks like Joško has become a poor Michel Vonk.

Definitely feels like a contract negotiation tactic from Gvardiol's camp, he would be mad to leave, he only turned 24 in January, he plays every week when he is fit and is a big player for us.

For me next season he would be the first choice left back again - we lose too much of his ability going forward when he plays centre half. O'Reilly can move into midfield full-time.

Nunes/RB - Khushanov/Dias - Guehi - Gvardiol seems ideal to me.

Also, of course he enjoyed working under Pep, just like all our players. But where is the rumor coming from he was only in it for Pep? Even Sam Lee said nothing about that. When Josko signed Pep only had one more year on his deal, so he likely expected less time with Pep than others. In fact his recent quote doesn’t indicate any particularly propensity to only play for Pep:

“We learned a lot. Everyone who had chance to work with him became a better player and person. I’m sure Manchester City will choose the right new coach and continue where we left off.”

Maybe we need to listen to him before we jump to conclusions based on crappy news aggregators looking for clicks?

I think when you look at Khusanov, it took him a year to become a mainstay in the team.

Gvardiol was the same age when he joined, he’s 24 now and still not a guaranteed starter in his favoured position.

Huge chasm between them imo.
This has nothing to do with Khusa’s talent, which I think is exceptional. but let’s be honest. He only became a mainstay in the team because of injuries.

This is it, he's been out injured and seen a worse centre back come in on mega wages and wants parity at least. If I was the club's record CB signing, been great for a few years and then some lad from Palace rocks up on £300k a week, I'd be making some noise about a new contract as well, and the way agents play it out in the media is just common practice now.

Equally important is where could he go? We bought him for £80m+ he's still got 2 years left on his contract. Are Bayern/Real going to make him the first £100m defender? I don't think so.

Well according to Gvardiol's agent
Even an agent understands that when you're injured, it doesn't matter whose shirt you wear, you aren't playing. Why on earth would he feel any unrest? He had competition anyway. Admittedly Guehi has come in, but Stones has gone and who knows whether Ruben will be here next year?

Amazing how so many posters change their opinion of a player based upon hearsay without the player himself actually doing or saying anything.

What these so called in the know’s don’t seem to be mentioning is the transfer fee (£100m’ish) and huge wages that would be needed. As if Bayern will be splashing that out

For me, Gvardiol is our highest quality player behind a fit Rodri.

We could give him Grealish’s money since he’ll be off.

Gvardiol might be our best all-round footballer, and I think he’s got potential to be ballon d’or quality.

He’s an amazing attacking LB, he’s a great CB and he’s actually technically good enough to play on midfield - probably better than Stones, who was great at doing a hybrid role, if a new manager came in and decided he wanted Gvardiol in midfield full time like Maresca put James in midfield, he could do it. I wouldn’t want him to because I think his qualities make him stand out more in defence, but he could.

Passing (ability and vision), touch etc excellent, good finisher, great mentality, pace, physical.

You just don’t sell that player. Especially when he’s just turned 24 and there’s a bit of a leadership exodus. Of all the players in the squad, he’s one of only a few who will be added to the list of post takeover legends if he stays here another 5+ years.

Do. Not. Sell.

What he said.

I don't see him leaving this season.

Has 2 years left so if he doesn’t look like signing this summer should we just let it run down to 1? Or sell him now for a very good fee or wait to next season still hoping he signs a new contract!!?

Am hoping it’s his agent wanting more money for his client

That is probably one of the reasons for the reports. It is similar to Rodri as well. We aren't going to lose all our key players in one window. If anything (much as I don't want to lose him either) Ruben Dias could be the one we do lose.
