24 | Joško Gvardiol - 2025/26

Class player, would be gutted if he left. But if he only ever wanted to play for Guardiola he was never really ours then was he

Sure we will cope with Guehi, Khusanov and the rest of the players that want to be here.

the drama today from sportske novosti, posted by city xtra, is utter bs, their source is spanish media, not gvardiol’s camp.

i have no idea what gvardiol wants to do but the fact that top clubs want him does not mean he necessarily wants to leave.

plenty of time to shit on him if he leaves, no need to do it now when he literally hasn’t done or said anything about wanting to leave.

Madrid / Barca client media sensing an opportunity to unsettle players in the wake of Pep leaving.

I do think Rodri is gonna go next year, but I reckon Gvardiol will stay.

Guehi is going to need to get used to playing RCB like Dias did, as a player with Gvardiol’s skill set will be first choice in Maresca’s system.

Gvardiol might be our best all-round footballer, and I think he’s got potential to be ballon d’or quality.

He’s an amazing attacking LB, he’s a great CB and he’s actually technically good enough to play on midfield - probably better than Stones, who was great at doing a hybrid role, if a new manager came in and decided he wanted Gvardiol in midfield full time like Maresca put James in midfield, he could do it. I wouldn’t want him to because I think his qualities make him stand out more in defence, but he could.

Passing (ability and vision), touch etc excellent, good finisher, great mentality, pace, physical.

You just don’t sell that player. Especially when he’s just turned 24 and there’s a bit of a leadership exodus. Of all the players in the squad, he’s one of only a few who will be added to the list of post takeover legends if he stays here another 5+ years.

Do. Not. Sell.
This. It's the job of Viana, Soriano and Maresca to do what's needed to keep our top players. If that means a big new contract and others being let go to pay for it, then so be it. If it means giving him assurances over game time, so be it.

I would hope he doesn't have an issue with playing at left back because that's his best position, but he's still worth keeping even if he only wants to play in the middle. He'll be one of the first names on the team sheet when fit wherever he plays.

Wouldn't surprise me if by the end of next season our first choice back line is

Khusanov Guehi Gvardiol O'Reilly

Big test for Viana - JG, as others have said, has the talent to be genuinely world class. We need players of this standard to win leagues and champions. Even more so since with have lost Pep and his genius. We need to keep Josko and if we do then it will be a good indicator that we still mean business.

Bump his wages and see if his stance changes. Hopefully just contract shit. Too good a player to let go and coming to his prime too. Should be part of the nucleus of the next gen.

I think Josko is too massive a unit to play LB consistently, AND he's losing too many balls in midfield when he panics in tighter spaces.
I like him as a CB, but as I said I prefer Guéhi with his calmness (except that clownery at Everton, but I didn't see many more poor mistakes).
Josko is a little rash as a personality IMO, it is what it is.

We'll see.
Bonus here is Josko can play both to an extremely high standard. I also prefer him at CB but he is a threat at LB. Really looks like Oreilly copied Joskos playbook in that position.

stop making shit up ffs

You can probably find 20 more and I didn't have anything to do with "making it up"

I want him to stay FFS!

This seems to be the modern way for newspapers and TV to sell themselves to their audiences.
In the last fortnight, along with Gvardiol, players such as Trafford, Dias, Ait Nouri , Ake, Reijnders, Savinho, Rodri, Nico G and Marmoush are supposedly all looking to leave.
Even with that list, I've probably missed a few.

Fecking Hell !!!
That's 10 players.
Not sure how many would now make the starting eleven (perhaps 2/3) ?
But, if you ever doubted the media trying to unsettle or rattle City, this is a unique campaign.
I thought City played much higher wages than anyone else - so why should 7/8 squad players be eager to move on ?
Baffled of Burnage...

Still maintain that this is a negotiating tactic. and this is one of my reservations in signing Eliot Anderson for big money. Need the funds to pay our stars what they are worth.

If Madrid miss out on Olise then I believe this becomes a real possibility. They're ready to splash the cash on Olise, also wanting another defender, but if they miss out on him then surely they can afford Gvardiol? Imo our best overall defender when fit and helps so much in build-up, would be gutted to see him leave. Need that renewal asap.

This might sound insane..

But I think keeping Gvardiol is more important than keeping Rodri at this point.
