We don't need to worry about that though. Liverpool can manage their own finances. City need to focus on getting in the right players this summer to challenge on all fronts.

Shouldn't we try and manage our finances as well? Including getting the best deals possible for players going in and out.

Say Sterling does stay all season at Liverpool, where does that leave City? Will we wait for a year and sacrifice winning trophies? Will we spend £30m on a non
homegrown player who isn't as good?

In the unlikely event that we move on from Sterling I would imagine we'll try and sign players that will help us win more silverware. Wasn't aware Sterling was the only player in the world capable of helping us with that.

Last I read somewhere we needed 4 based on squad size and maybe 2-4 more club trained. We're bringing a few of the youngsters in (but perhaps they take up those 2-4 club trained spots?). Hate having to figure this quota out every time.
Between 0-17 foreign players and between 0-25 home grown players.

Foreign + home grown must be equal to or less than 25.

So if we have 17 foreign players (we will) we can have between 0-8 home grown players.

Under 21's are unlimited and don't take up a place

No offense mate but the replacement signings we've targeted in the last don't fill me with confidence. There's a reason they are secondary targets, they aren't as good as the primary target.

"Rather walk away then give them the £50m. If it's £45m then fine"

Are you paying for this?

50 mil but 45 is fine? Fuckin idiot.

Yes we should. Because we absolutely need him. That's obvious.

I don't think it's that obvious at all. I'd like Sterling but if we need him to win things we've got some problems at the club.

What alternatives? Who else out there is a young, homegrown winger and good enough to get into our starting eleven?

Plenty of alternatives. They don't have to be young, they don't have to be homegrown either.

Ultimately poor planning over the last 3/4 seasons has put us in this situation for homegrown players. That is the single biggest failure of the board so far imo. Moves should of been made to make sure we had enough HG players for the future and wouldn't be needing to make sure we had to make signings like this to cover that rule. Yes he might be a world class player but if we didn't need HG at this point we would have other targets who we could be trying to get instead. The unique particulars of the player in question means it really is him or potentially noone because we couldn't accommodate another foreign player. The fact we have an overseas backup GK at this stage is also baffling. It is an easy position to fill with someone HG and good enough to be backup and wouldn't cause so much pressure on other positions we need to strengthen.

Let him play in their reserves then. No skin off our back. Another year of depreciation on his contract while he kicks up dust and created dressing room problems.

Won't hurt us. They'll be begging us to take him in January after Rodgers is sacked and they're sitting mid -table.

You're not understanding my point. We aren't paying a premium anymore, £50m is Liverpool's valuation for Sterling based on his potential and because he is home grown. They are not asking for £50m because we are a rich "oil" club.

Okay fair enough.

Personally I just don't rate him at £50m even based on the home grown factor.

He certainly has potential and that's why we are in for him but with a young player that can easily not be fulfilled.
For £50m I want the finished article.

Your lack of confidence isn't something that will take up much time in the minds of our negotiators.

We've done alright for ourselves these past few years, I think sometimes people forget about that.

No I'm not mate and it's just a case of oneupmanship. To the dippers it will be like they have won. Which matters little if he comes and is successful granted. From a footballing point of view it doesn't matter and yes I'm being petty.

I'm not Txiki's biggest fan but there is absolutely no way he should pay £50m for Sterling.

£40m is fair, £45m is too much, £50m is a joke.

We need to send a message to Liverpool and all the other clubs in this country that we
are no longer mugs who have to buy our way onto the top table.
The days of Lescott type transfers have gone.

If we lose out on Sterling so be it. I feel sorry for the lad but he can always join us next Summer.
We pay this and we'll continue having to pay "the City premium" .

That would also send out a message to players that City will tap me up, but when push comes to shove they will leave me high and dry and won't follow it through. Not the best message to send out.

Thanks for that.

So let's see if we're selling Jov and Dzeko as the papers say, we'll have

Aguero, Bony, Silva, Nasri, Navas, Yaya, Dinho, Nando, Kolarov, Mangala, Kompany, MDM, Zaba, Sagna, Willy.

That leaves room for TWO more non HG signings. And a proper alternative to signing sterling with that quota is:

Get rid of Willy and replace with HG keeper.

Then sign Pogba, DB, Lacazette.

Give them 60 million 70, 80. Who gives a fuck? I aint payin. Look's like two good signings are on the cards for this weekend.

Don't think it'll happen but I agree totally with 1.

Don't understand the reasoning behind wasting a foreign spot on a reserve keeper who'll barely play

It's easy to call them clueless at the moment, but if they end up getting the full £50m then you'd have to say their stance has been vindicated.

Even though they've covered themselves in no glory in this affair, their allies in the media will ensure they win the PR battle.

If we get Sterling and win the league though, then we've won the war.

Exactly this. It will be a small victory to them to get the money they have asked and to show they won't be bossed about. At the end of the day though we are taking their 20 year old golden boy winner off them who could give us 12 years service.

There's no shame in us trying to get the best price only to find out the selling club are spiteful twats who would rather keep an unhappy player for a year than accept a penny less.

Pay up, let Raheem loose on them this year and drive the price up on Benteke and the rest of their transfer targets for the summer ;)

Thanks to the core of players signed by Cook. Hart, Zab, Kompany, Silva, Yaya and Aguero. The new regime have been complacent and thought they could simply sign complimentary squad players rather than expensive first teamers. Now we are in a shit position because Yaya is 32, we have no home grown players, and many of the squad players like Fernando and Sagna have proved to be quite shit.

The only reason we can think of buying him is because of the way they've made it almost impossible for Sterling to play. They may have been stubborn, but so is a donkey. I doubt they will get £50m. Not sure it matters that much. Main thing is getting the player.

Assuming we have tapped him up!

Okay in the real world we will have but he could still join us in 12 months time and get a huge signing on fee to ease his discomfort.
