I think almost exactly the opposite to you on these two points.
1) Liverpool giving it the big one "NEVER for less than £50m" - We get him for a sarcastic £49m - We win
2) I don't think the two deals were connected in any way, I really don't think that the "failure" of one is in any way connected to the "success" of the other.
