Ignoring potential transfers (in or out), where are we currently up to with the squad ?

With particular regards to our younger first team squad members like Iheanacho, Roberts, Lopes, Denayer, etc

The regulations differ from CL to PL, so its not clear what if any spaces we have, can an expert enlighten us all ?

Thanks.

Champions League requires 8 homegrown players of which 4 have to be association trained, and 4 have to be club trained. The definition of club trained is 3 years at the club before turning 21. So currently we have:

Association Trained: Clichy, Hart, Delph, and Sterling.

The club trained question is more complex. As far as I can tell of the current players who we are looking to promote, this season only Lopes would count as h/g as he's the only one who's been at the club long enough. I don't think Denayer, Garcia, or Kelechi would count as they haven't been at the club for 3 years yet.

Rather than looking at it as spaces we need to fill its more a limitation of foreign players.

For the CL as Billy has said you can have 17 foreign, 4 HG & 4 Club trained.

We however don't have to fill all the spaces and could leave them blank providing we don't go over the 17 foreign players limit.

At present we have 15 foreign (Willy, Mangala, Sagna, Demi, Kolarov, Kompany, Zaba, Fernandinho, Fernando, Nasri, Navas, Silva, Yaya, Aguero & Bony) so that leaves us 2 free spots.

HG we have Clichy, Hart & Delph as Sterling being under 21 can go on the B list and doesn't have to be included in the main squad.

So the latter 3 would then have to be counted as part of the 17 remaining players ? That's what I thought so in the CL would probably be left out of the squad if we sign anyone else that is not home grown (or club trained).

What about in the PL ?

Doesn't matter in the PL as you don't have to register players under 21 full stop.

Im sure its the same with 17 & 8 HG but there is no stipulation in them being Club Trained

Looking at the numbers realistically it's hard to see how we can bring in Pogba and De Bruyne without going into the CL a body short in the forward department as we'd be going in with Kun and Bony only. That's a very risky strategy.

Lopes, Denayer, Nacho and Sterling are u21 and don't need to be registered for Premier League.

Lopes will count as club trained for CL, Sterling will be the fourth association trained player and Denayer will be on the B list and won't take up a squad spot. Nacho will have to go on the A list if we want to use him, next year we can use the B list for him and he'll be club trained the season after.

No he can't because he hasn't been at City for 2 years, he is however Association trained and will count as one of the four in the A-list.

Ha. You've lost me! :)

Can you have a look at my post above and tell me if I'm wrong ie. that we can bring in two more foreign players and still register Kelechi in the CL.

The group of 17 in the CL squad are known as 'free' players rather than 'foreign', as you can have whatever nationalities you like, including English. There's also the B-List, where the requirement is slightly different to the A-List homegrown one I think, which is unlimited. Nastasic would have qualified as a B-List player last season as I think you only need to have been at a club for 2 years and be under 21.

We can't. He hasn't been here for 2 years yet so can't go on the B list.

Kelechi needs to be registered as a "foreign" player in our 25 man squad for the Champion's League. This is because, despite him being under 21, he hasn't spent 2 years at the club yet. When next season comes around he will still be under 21, but he'll have been at City for 2 years by that stage, so will not need to be registered in the 25 man squad. So, for this season, we can have 17 non-homegrown players in our squad, but Kelechi would need to be 1 of those 17 if we intend on using him.

We can't. He hasn't been here for 2 years yet so can't go on the B list.

As I suspected. So what do you think then - you think City will go into the CL with two senior forwards and bring in another foreign player on top of KDB - or do you think it'll be KDB plus Kelechi ?

I agree, though obviously Sterling could fill in if required. This may well be what is driving our current efforts in the transfer market.

Has Denayer been here long enough to be on the B list ?

"Open" squad slots (i.e. anyone can be named here)
1 - Caballero
2 - Sagna
3 - Zabaleta
4 - Kompany
5 - Demichelis
6 - Mangala
7 - Kolarov
8 - Fernando
9 - Fernandinho
10 - Toure
11 - Nasri
12 - Navas
13 - Silva
14 - Bony
15 - Aguero
16 - Dzeko
17 - Iheanacho
"Homegrown squad slots (first 4 association trained, 2nd 4 club trained)
18 - Hart
19 - Clichy
20 - Delph
21 - Sterling (still under 21 but been a City player less than 2 years)
22 - No one qualifies for these positions in City's first team squad.
23 - No one qualifies for these positions in City's first team squad.
24 - No one qualifies for these positions in City's first team squad.
25 - No one qualifies for these positions in City's first team squad.

Richard Wright misses out as we can't find a slot for him unless Iheanacho, or Dzeko, are excluded. If Dzeko is sold then we have 1 free spot, available to anyone.

None of our club trained players are, as yet, over the age of 21, and all have been at the club for 2 years (hence "club trained"). These players don't take up one of the 25 man squad positions, they are added to a "B List" which only has 2 rules for inclusion. 1 - Is the player under 21 as at 1st January 2015? 2 - Has the player been at City for 2 years? Players such as Denayer, Lopes, Barker etc can be added to the B List.
