You play players on form, not reputation, and on form he's not. Denayer is coming off a very good season, and should be rewarded for it, we can manage him through the season, he doesn't have to start every week, but there's no reason why not to start him next week, he's in form and confident, the complete opposite of Vinny.
Correct.

That's true and the pre-season may be the only form to judge but given the successful pairing of Mangala and MD at the end of last season Eli has to play. If MD isn't ready Pellegrini will be under enormous pressure to play the captain despite this last poor showing.

I thought he looked pretty poor against Madrid and had a bad first half hour against Vietnam, but he looked a lot more settled today. Him and Mangala looked to have a much better understanding, switching sides and filling in for each other pretty seemlessly. As long as the ball is on the floor I think he's excellent, his marking and positioning from crosses looks like it still needs a lot of improvement (not needed today)

And which defenders don't look poor against Bale, Benzema and fake?

Not very many.

I didn't see the Real Madrid game, so can't really comment, but he looked calm and assured today. The little I saw of VK, he looked very out of form. Maybe the interrupted pre-season he's had with his son being born hasn't helped.

I would play JD with Mangala at the Hawthorns.

It wasn't Ronaldo or Bale running at him that he struggled with, his problem was that he wasn't getting anywhere near his man on crosses. (which is obviously a worry in the premier league) On the floor he didn't really have any problems at all, neither did he in the air when he actually was in place to compete for the headers, he just let people get away from him on 3 or 4 crosses which led to at least a couple of goals (although that wasn't helped by our leftbacks not stopping or even closing down crosses)

Just in his defence a little more, he was playing with a 16 year old partner who he was also trying to protect from Bale, Ronaldo, Benzema, etc. maybe he was also concerned by that, and I very much doubt those two had played more than 10 minutes together before, and they played 90 against Real Madrid, he being the 'senior' central defender.

Does that really affect your ability to mark players from crosses though? It wasn't an organisational issue or about him over covering for his partner, it was just him letting his man run off him. He could well have been nervous and playing alongside Humphries certainly wouldn't have helped that. Hard to really tell from friendlies

Maybe it does if you're inexperienced, and also worrying about someone else who you've never played with, who has gone from playing against 16 year olds to playing against 3 of the best players in the world overnight, perhaps it might just cause some indecision.

He did well today but not well enough to displace Eli or VK at West Brom. Changing that pairing would signal chaos in the camp.

And when was the last time Eli and Vinnie played together competitively?

Mangala and Demichelis started the last six games and the one before that was the swamp Derby, where VK and DM started. Mangala replaced Vinnie at half-time.

He hasn't played that role for 4 or 5 years, so he won't be doing it next week in a crucial game, if there was any chance of that happening they would have tried it second half today, the fact Vinny was taken off tells you all you need to know about him playing DM next week.
I'm not saying we're going to do it mate. Was just saying we should. We're short in midfield, and he's playing gash in defence (for a year now). He's our leader and good on the ball. Just makes perfect sense to me. Otherwise, there's now way we can play him and Mangala together with kolarov left back. We'll be two down in 20 mins defo. But no doubt that's wat pellers will do. Loosing a bit of patience with him now. Pre season has been a shambles. And I don't mean just the results. Letting the copa America boys have that much time off is ridiculous. Would Messi and Neymar miss barcas first game? Nope! Was optimistic before pre season but not anymore.

I can't agree, just because we're short in midfield, is no reason to play someone out of position, in an important role, whilst he's playing "gash". Today he neither led, nor was he good on the ball, and he's one of my favourite City players, but he's woefully out of form, so if he can't play in his best position, he shouldn't be playing.

Yes it does when the back 4 is not organised & that's what I see with any 4 who are playing there. The first goal was a toed volley from Benzema which was never going to be Denayer's ball, but he should have blocked, but he also had Sagna steaming in sideways & causing confusion. His biggest mistake was the corner kick, which ironically was the same mistake made by his much championed replacement Otamendi in the league game vs Real.

He was shit on that, but he isn't great at winning headers full stop. He knows it & has improved, but City need to think about stuff like this, not just witb Denayer but the size and physical stature balance of the side & positioning of players depending on which 11 they pick.

Right now it seems to me as if Pellegrini is not doing anything like enough work on any of it. Hopefully now he will do during the week.

OK we'll agree to disagree. I think you need to think outside of the box to be successful and apart from the Milner up front thing, pellers doesn't seem to do this

It's a difficult call. I would rather they had the time off now rather than risking coming back early and either picking up knocks and niggles or burning out mid season. Someone better qualified that us has made that call and we need to respect it.

Not sure playing anone so much out of form will result in success. I would give Vinnie a rest, like Joe got when his form dropped

Personally I think you just need to think!
The players in the Copa America are guaranteed time off from FIFA so you can hardly blame the manager, but you do
