I need a car for work. I have between £10-£14k to spend. The car must have:

- excellent fuel economy
- automatic gearbox
- sat nav
- 5-door

What would you go for?

New or bangernomics? If new then you will only be looking at a small car or something French or equally shit! Second hand and you can have whatever you want. I'd go for a 3 year old for that money!

Why are so many recommending foreign cars to JOTL?

You don't know him very well do you?

Go for a Morris Marina.

Not really in the price range, but worth getting! I'm getting one in the next month or two.

I wasn't sure from the OP if it was a new or 2nd hand car he was after. No doubt he could pick up an automatic Yeti that's only a year or two old that would fall within his price range. I have always had BMWs and Mercedes before but the Yeti is the best car I've ever had.

So age of vehicle is going to drive your choice and peoples recommendations

And you need to decide what you want it for too - other than the usual dads taxi/commuting/shopping requirements, what else?
Will it be the family transit van?
Will you want to load it up for a holiday abroad or in the uk?
Do you want to win the traffic light grand prix? or the M60 Le Mans? (ha ha right)

I won't mention the scruples and german thing at this point... maybe I will - do you want to support car industry in this country?

take all that in to consideration and have a look what your money could get you on autotrader.co.uk

lurvely.... first car I ever bought was one of these

Bottom line Civics, Ceeds, Focus, are all within budget from drivethedeal. Get their quote then take it to dealers until you find one who will deal with you direct?

Fiesta is a great little car, the ecoboost engine has a great rep. aim for 11000 for a decent trim line?

Polo Bluemotion 95 should be doable budget and well worth a shout. The badge is still worth quite a lot in the second hand market, and 2nd hand polos are always sought after by parents for their kids first car. VW dealers will be happy just to see you!

Octavia's are awesome but the discount sites have them starting at a few hundred over 14k.
