Why the hate for Robbie Fowler?

I got my first season ticket in 2004, i was rather young and probably look at that time with a bit of nostalgia. But i awlays remember Fowler as being my favourite player at the time, and when he scored the third goal when we beat United 3-1 i thought he was the dogs Bo**cks.

But on here so many times ive seen his name pop up when talking about gash players lists like Corradi, Mcmanaman and Samaras. Was he really that bad? Or was he not liked for other reasons? Why the hate?

He was decent in one year, got 3rd in our POTY from memory.

Never bothered to get fit, and (understandably) jumped back to Liverpool at first opportunity but I didnt mind him.

I never hated him at all but always had the feeling his heart wasn't 100% in it at City. That might be unfair and maybe it was just a case of him not living up to our hopes. A renaissance was always "just around the corner" but never happened.

No problem with him as a person. In fact he seems like someone who's got his head screwed on properly. Much prefer him to MacMinimum, who should pack up shit punditry and just fcuk off.

Yeah, I think hate is a bit strong. As has been said, I don't think his heart was here 100%. He was never a "true blue" as such. He had a good year here and then couldn't get fit again. He doesn't seem that bad a person, just probably.definitely in the twilight of his career.

As an aside, my first match was when we beat Fulham 4-1 @ Maine Rd. We signed Fowler that week and I thought we were the dogs bollocks. Next match was West Brom who were bottom of the league at the time I think. We lost 1-2. I experienced Typical City in person at the first bat.

I was luckily on holiday with the family and missed that game, David James going up front... Christ we had big problems around that time haha

Just missing out on Europe, big problems?? That was a good season in comparison to other recent efforts.

Was funny when he scored against the rags and ran passed their fans giving it 5 times. They didnt like that.

I can't go with the comments that he didn't want to be at City and therefore didn't put it in 100%. I honestly believe he tried his best it's just that his fitness wasn't there and he was never going to be what he was when he first burst onto the scene with the red dippers. To be fair if he was anywhere close to that level he would't have been at City.

I hated him with a passion. He was the beginning of the end for KK who claimed that he asked anelka which player he would most like to play up front with and apparently he claimed it was blobby fowler.
He missed that pen
He was overweight
His footballing skill had left him and he never looked bothered
He was on a high salary at a time when we were potless
He's a scouser
But mainly coz his heart wasn't in it and countless times the ball would just bounce off him. He was like a poor man's bernado corradi (apologies bernado if you're reading this)
He wasn't known as mr blobby fowler for nowt
Etc etc

My most hated city player

When a goalkeeper is going up front not all is rosey haha. And things did get worse after that season all the way up until Sven really. So yeah i stick by the big problems remark.

And yeah, thats what made me love him i think haha

wow haha, its crazy how much nostalgia can be misleading, i suppose my knowledge of the game wasnt as finely tuned back then either. Cheers for the reasoning mate :)

Not getting into Europe and being completely safe in the Premier League was a good season by our standards then, when we had been in the third division only 6 years before, that was big problems, its all relative.

The next season (or was it the season after), only scoring 10 league goals at home and narrowly avoiding relegation thanks to Emile Mpenza, now that was big problems. Not 3rd division problems, but you know.

Strongly disagree with this.
He had just scored for Manchester City in a Manchester Derby and his first thoughts were of his precious Liverpool. Nothing funny about that, whatsoever. It was disrespectful of City fans more than United's - at least they counted in his narrow, little worldview.
As others have said above, his heart clearly wasn't in it at City. To be fair, he tried to knuckle down and gave it his best shot as a professional (he admits in his autobiography that his first year was gash) but well, if you're pining for your ex, don't expect your new squeeze to play along and pretend everything is hunky-dory. Or indeed, to have fond memories of you after the inevitable break up.

He was billed as a final piece of the jigsaw type alongside Nicolas Anelka but he was a spent force, his injuries at Leeds essentially finished him. My only two highlights if him are a great cup goal at Birmingham and winding up the rags, all that said I don't think I've ever heard him shit on city unlike a few others so he's okay in my book.

Was a terrible signing which put the final nail on both Keegan's coffin and the entire set up at the time. Was the cause of Bernstein leaving unless i'm mistaken.

Interesting timing on this one (for me) as I was actually with him yesterday. We're hoping to work with him on a project, but anyway...

He is a really sound bloke and the type of guy you could go for a pint with. Totally humble and asked me about city and how we played against Sevilla - he'd obviously heard how good we'd been and was really complimentary about us and De Bruyne. Although he thinks Sterling is good, he doesn't think he'll reach the same level due to his technique and awareness - I know what you're all thinking.

I just don't think it worked out for him at at City. But I'm still grateful for the goals against United, and the fact he hates them as much as me will always make him a good lad in my book.
