Why the hate for Robbie Fowler?

Strongly disagree with this.
He had just scored for Manchester City in a Manchester Derby and his first thoughts were of his precious Liverpool. Nothing funny about that, whatsoever. It was disrespectful of City fans more than United's - at least they counted in his narrow, little worldview.
As others have said above, his heart clearly wasn't in it at City. To be fair, he tried to knuckle down and gave it his best shot as a professional (he admits in his autobiography that his first year was gash) but well, if you're pining for your ex, don't expect your new squeeze to play along and pretend everything is hunky-dory. Or indeed, to have fond memories of you after the inevitable break up.

A bit of context, they had been giving him dogs abuse all game, so that was a bit of schadenfreude for Fowler, winding them up back in a way he knew would get to them. Saying it was disrespectful to City is a bit much.

I agree his heart wasnt in it at City, his hip problems had made him quite immobile, he improved in his second season but that wasnt saying much.

The next season (or was it the season after), only scoring 10 league goals at home and narrowly avoiding relegation thanks to Emile Mpenza, now that was big problems. Not 3rd division problems, but you know.

Was chatting about Pearce's second season in another thread at the weekend, many blues gave up because of that soulless year, many more came very close to giving up (I nearly did). We were always entertaining, in one way or another, but the nothingness of that season, left a scar for many, I still dont know how so many of us endured it looking back.

I can't go with the comments that he didn't want to be at City and therefore didn't put it in 100%. I honestly believe he tried his best it's just that his fitness wasn't there and he was never going to be what he was when he first burst onto the scene with the red dippers. To be fair if he was anywhere close to that level he would't have been at City.
I spoke with David Bernstein a few years ago about the Fowler transfer and its repercussions. He tried to talk Keegan out of it (or at least to offer a deal that was heavily conditional on Fowler achieving certain targets) on the grounds of fitness and DB's belief that he was using us as a stepping stone to get back to Liverpool.

I don't recall there being any hate for Fowler either. Everyone was keen for him to do well.

He was billed as a final piece of the jigsaw type alongside Nicolas Anelka but he was a spent force, his injuries at Leeds essentially finished him. My only two highlights if him are a great cup goal at Birmingham and winding up the rags, all that said I don't think I've ever heard him shit on city unlike a few others so he's okay in my book.
he was fucked when he left Liverpool truth beknown, they'd never have let him go if it hadn't been for injuries, they go on about his fall out with big nose but this guy was one of the biggest talents of Premiership history,no way would they have allowed him to go to another rival if he was in full fitness, when he arrived at City he was a shadow of the player he was,sad to see...

His heart wasn't in football when he was at City, he walked into Keegan and Pearce in floods of tears wanting to quit football altogether.

Pearce talked him out of it, him and Anelka hated each other as 'The Elk' played for himself and wouldn't even pass to him on occasions.

I was amazed when we got Fowler thinking we were on the cusp of something big with him and Anelka upfront. Left a big split in the club with Bernstein leaving as he did not want to sanction the transfer as he knew how dodgy Folwler's hip was.

At least Leeds subsidised his wages for a time whilst he was here, imagine if we were facing financial Armageddon and at the same time paying a player to play for another club?

I was pissed off with him giving the 5 times salute to the rags when he scored, there were two more detestable players in that team then though with Stevie 'point Alot' Mcmananan and Danny Mills.

That season and for two seasons prior i went to the games with my grandad and two other men, the two other men never went to another city game after that season, how wasnt we relegated? hahaha

I'm not generally-speaking given to critiquing footballer's celebrations, so I didn't actually say to those around me, "hang on, let's see how he spontaneously reacts to this undoubtedly joyous moment". In fact, I didn't even realise he'd done it until I saw it on telly, that night. That said, your last sentence is a fair reflection of my first reactions upon seeing it.

That's City he scored for. Manchester City are not now and never have been a conduit for point scoring in some petty squabble between any other clubs.

But hey, it's done now and each to their own. If you enjoyed it, good for you.

When Adebayor ran the length of the pitch and knee slid in front of Mickey Flanagan and his mates, did that piss you off like Fowler did?? Fairly similar circumstances as the first thought by the player was to give back a little of what they had received, I thought both were quite funny and not disrespectful towards City.

Didn't he make a comment when he went back to Liverpool that he would make an effort to get fit now he was going back to Anfield?

I never hated him, just thought he was useless and using us a final pay day.

Im talking about hate nowadays towards him, not at the time of his signing.

Good point. Oddly enough, it didn't get as bothered about it, at all. In fact, I found it funny.
I take your point about the incidents being broadly similar too but the difference is important, too. If Adebayour scored for Spurs v Arsenal and referenced City in his celebrations would all Spurs fans agree that it was a proper course of action? I suspect they'd be having the same discussion we are now.

I suppose it's all about instinctive reaction. Liverpool, Timbuktu Rovers or The Dog & Duck first XI, don't concern me when City score against Utd, Arsenal or anybody else.
I didn't support Robbie Fowler in a Liverpool shirt and I didn't like him suggesting that he'd just scored for them by proxy (if you know what I mean) in what used to be the biggest game of our season.
(That said, the Adebayour moment was worth it for that gif of the Arsenal fans alone!).

Adebayor is a strange one (in more ways than one) that the Spurs and Arsenal fans both sang songs about him, that they were appalled by when he wore their shirt, but were fine with when they wore the other team's colours, but I get your point, although if he would them up in a similar way, I think most Spurs fans would be happy that the Tarquins were upset.

I get what you are saying that other teams dont concern you when City score, but the players dont have the same emotional attachment to City that we do, they didnt grow up dreaming of scoring for City, far from it, so we cant expect the same reactions from them that we would have. They are only human and its only fair to give it back if you've been on the receiving end. Also, Fowler had form for doing stupid things when he scored in reaction to terrace taunts, like sniffing the line in reaction to the cocaine chants and splaying his arse cheeks to Le Saux in retort to the chants about Le Saux's sexuality after Le Saux elbowed him.

Fowler's half arsed attitude wound me up far more than him upsetting rags thats for sure. Especially as I remember being really excited about having him and the Elk upfront having had the likes of Fat Bob Taylor and Barry Conlon up front only a few years before.

I know a lad who was sat in the airport the day after we won our first title. He was minding his own business when someone approached him and asked if they could join him for a few mins. He looked up and saw Robbie Fowler there. Robbie sat with him for about a half hour and wanted to ask him loads about the day our fans just had. He said he was genuinely made up that City fans finally got a taste of glory and said that if one set of fans deserved a day like that it was us. Apparently he was genuinely giddy over what happened the day before and just wanted to talk to City fans.

My opinion of Robbie went way,way up after hearing that.

I always think he is unfortunate as he was doing well for us but then got lumped in the same bracket as MacMinimum once he turned up.

You're right about mine being an unreal expectation, @Paul Lake's Left Knee and, as you imply, if he'd gone on to perform better, I probably wouldn't still be so testy about it.

Fuck me... Barry Conlon... *shudders*

Not hated by most - disappointment Id say. And defo true that he never tried to get fit - my sister rang me from the Lowry hotel the night before a game - he was in there boozing. He put his pint in front of the fella he was sat next to -but he was necking them. He scored next day though

He couldn't be arsed to get fit. He played shit when he was here and obviously missed that pen.

Didn't he say something when he went back to Liverpool about trying and getting fit etc? Unless I made that bit up. Although his hatred for United always shone through
