For further information about the badge, you can attend a free, one-hour lecture at the CFA Media Centre by Manchester football historian Gary James. Tickets are limited to one per person and are offered on a first come, first served basis. To reserve your place, follow the instructions below:

Wednesday 11 November: 12.30-1.30pm (Open to all – send an email to badgelectures@mcfc.co.uk)

I went to the talk yesterday and it was excellent.

I think some of the information about the history of the badge and significance of components in the past was quite surprising to some people. A good proportion of the audience said they had changed their minds about what they wanted or did not want in the badge.

I would encourage any enthusiastic city supporter to attend.

I'd also urge anyone who can attend who hasn't yet to go along and hear Gary's talks on the badges and it's history.

I went along yesterday and although my views haven't changed significantly, I did learn much more about the history of city's badges, but also about badges used in football in general.

Free cookies were nice as well :D

for me its not the badge its all about the name MANCHESTER CITY FC and the blue and white shirts you can stick anything on the shirt and it will still be Manchester city even if we just go down the road with M.C.F.C like the Leeds of the 60s/70s I would love. having a fan debate is good to see and the club have the fans at heart and like I said we would still love Manchester city with micky mouse on the badge

Good post by @ancoats Totally agree that the name is what we want people to notice first.

MCFC BADGE TRIVIA QUIZ
Okay, for all those who are interested in the Manchester City FC badge consultation I’ve compiled a series of questions which you may want to have a go at. Those that have already watched the videos on the MCFC website, visited the consultation space or come to one of my lectures should know the answers. See how much you remember. Those that haven’t been to the talks, have a go anyway and if you are stumped on any of the answers or are uncertain, then arrange to come to the last talk on 11th November at 12.30-1.30pm (Open to all – send an email to badgelectures@mcfc.co.uk).
The answers will be posted on my facebook.com/garyjames4 on the afternoon of the 11th November.
Here goes:
1. Ignoring slight variations in colour or wording to account for anniversaries and events (such as the last season at Maine Road), how many bespoke Manchester City badges have appeared on City’s League shirts?
2. What did the ‘original’ bespoke MCFC badge look like and how long did it last?
3. Name the first cup final to feature the Manchester eagle on a shirt, and name the club that wore it.
4. What badge did Rodney Marsh wear when he made his debut?
5. When did the eagle first appear on City’s shirts?

10. Who was chairman when the Red Rose badge was introduced?
11. How many trophies were won while the red rose badge was City’s emblem?

14. At the 1970 League Cup final what badge was sewn on to mascot Paul Todd’s red and black City shirt?
15. What bridge close to the Etihad stadium carries the Manchester shield that is typical of the original City badge?
16. What badge was on the plaque presented to Gornik by Tony Book at the 1970 ECWC final?
17. What do the three stars signify?
18. What’s the main difference between the ship on the original badge and the ship on the red rose badge?
19. Which badge lasted longest as City’s bespoke emblem?
20. What have City always said the three emblazoned lines on the original badge and on the current badge represent?
21. Of all the elements of the City badges and Manchester coat of arms, which is the one element that has been associated with the Manchester area the longest?
22. What badge was worn on the City shirt for League games in 1978?
23. Which was the first derby match to see City wear a badge, and what was the score?
24. Who was manager when the red rose badge was introduced?
25. Which father and son combination both wore the red rose during their playing days?
26. Which badge was illuminated on the old City Social club throughout the 70s and 80s, and into the 90s (though the bulb may well have gone at some point!)?
27. Which river cuts through the Etihad campus/stadium complex?
28. What badge was on City’s shirt at the 1999 play off final?
29. When did the eagle first appear on MCFC produced material?
30. How many bespoke City badges did Neil Young wear during his career?
31. What badge was on City shirts when Brian Kidd played for City?

35. Which badge links relegation in 1983 and the 5-1 against United in 1989?

Just looked at the badge on my brew mug and noticed after all these years, why isn't the back flag blowing in the wind direction like the front sail and front 2 flags ?

Come to the talk - I try to explain all elements, but basically it has been suggested it was to ensure 1 particular version of the badge could be trade marked as different. The original badge (1930s to 1972) had all 3 the right way around and so did some early red rose badges.

By the way this is answer 18 on my list of questions.

Worst of all, number 3 wasn't ours.
Same is true (but much earlier, 1909) for the red rose, but I decided against asking when that first appeared in a cup final worn by a Manchester club. I posed these trivia questions as a bit of fun, and example of what comes out of the talks. Of course there's much more to the story of our badges than snippets like this. I'm absolutely delighted City are approaching this in the way they are. This is a great opportunity and, ultimately, as fans we need to ensure the club know our views. If the vast majority of respondents go for particular emblems then that's great democracy. Let's use the opportunity and submit our own preferred ideas - never assume someone else has. Thanks to City for this great opportunity and incredible fan engagement. No other club has done this.

Thanks for answering ,I've also read that it is some sort of good luck thing the sail and flag blowing back to port to signify the ship having a safe trip, have you heard this ?

I've seen that on these threads but from a City context it was when we went from the original direction to the 'wrong' direction that we started the decline as a club, so not certain it's a lucky charm for us (mind you the period since 1999 also saw the flag the wrong way around, so maybe it balances out in the end).

For anyone interested I appear on the Bluemoon podcast answering a few of David Mooney's questions on the badge here: http://bluemoon-mcfc.co.uk/podcast/episodes/158-bae.mp3

Let's not change the badge, we are on a good run and don't need any of this!
Plus I like the new one.
We just keep going up and up with this badge let's clean up for the next few years!

I've posted some more of the slides from my talks here: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10153236441762816.1073741832.289818652815&type=3

It's still not all of them, but does now include details on the elements. Of course, the slides only show the images and do not include the hour long talk and questions, but I hope they help. This is the last chance to submit comments, so get your views in. Might also be worth listening to http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p035t406 and then go to http://www.mcfc.co.uk/news/club-news/2015/october/badge-consultation to submit your views. It's the only guaranteed way they get directly to the people responsible: http://www.mcfc.co.uk/news/club-news/2015/october/badge-consultation. Thanks
