Would any of the top calibre managers want the job without Champs League footy? It's hard enough getting top drawer players in when teams aren't competing in Champs League but even harder to convince a manager to join without imo. I think that is the reason he hasn't gone yet personally as at the moment there is still a miniscule chance of qualifying via Champs League win but just can't see it.

I think Simeone is nailed on for this. He seems a bit of an A-Hole which would make him a good fit for there. He might forego the Champions League football for one season as I think he would expect to get them back in the top 4 quite quickly and the resources on offer will be tempting. It wouldn't especially worry me if he did go there either.

Then Mourinho to the rags to replace LVG

Cheers Colin, tx for clearing that up. Not sure why Roman hasn't pulled the trigger tbh. He's clearly lost the dressing room and they are in real danger of a relegation dog fight. I can't see Costa, Hazard, Fabregas et al being up for that.

Perhaps the reluctance to sack him is linked to the impending Physio litigation early next year.It would be a little strange ( tho not impossible) for the moaning one to defend himself without the backing of his employer..they have backed him this far and i reckon they are awaiting the decision with interest..if indeed it moves to trial/contested hearing at the suggested time..The club clearly chose Jose over Eva...Maybe the media would end up lapping up all sorts of bad publicity from the trial if Jose were left to fight his own corner as a lose cannon....

Perhaps ,also, the club would have a good or cheaper reason to sack Jose should he lose the hearing..contrary to earlier posters views, i think the three year 10.2 million deal is a big issue...if Jose loses the employment case, the ending of his own employment contract would surely be a lot cheaper, on the grounds of bringing chelsea into disrepute, ie a breach of a clause which must surely be in every professional footballer/managers contract.

Privately, chelsea,s top men must be seething at the way the physio row was handled by jose..they could get their own back and sack him with much reduced compensation for the remaining years on his contract .

Of course, chelsea may just be hanging onto the bullet as long as they remain in the chumps league...Brinkmanship at its finest whilst their league form resembles that of man utds youth teams...all of em.

Good point Dennis. Whatever the reason, it makes an amusing sideshow to the serious business of trying to win the title back.

Big crowd there for your London Derby, mate ;-)

It's an incredible situation, really; unprecedented in the modern era. It's not necessarily easily resolvable either imo.

Unlike most, I'm ambivalent about Mourinho. On occasions I've seen him interviewed away from the cauldron of the stadium and he's struck me as quite an engaging, funny man. I know many who interact with him away from the cameras speak highly of him. It's also right to say that at times he's inspired a huge amount of loyalty from those who've played under him. I also think he's proved to be a tactical genius in many one-off games, Liverpool in 2014 being one such example.

On the other hand he can be an utterly graceless, petty and vindictive man. Some of his paranoid ramblings border on the absurd. The disrespectful way he talks of others, often without any provocation, is deeply unattractive and is possibly now proving to be counter productive; a siege mentality can only have a limited shelf-life in terms of its effectiveness, surely.

Given his exalted status within the game over the last decade it's easy to forget where he came from to arrive at that destination. He was a mediocre player who became a translator for Bobby Robson, before embarking on what has to be viewed as a remarkable footballing journey. One has to wonder after all those years of climbing that ladder so quickly and being hailed in certain quarters as one of the greatest managers of all time, whether he has the mental fortitude to cope with a significant diminution in his standing, especially if that is for a prolonged period.

Beneath that sneering, self-assured veneer lies, I suspect, a man with deep insecurities about where he came from and how he is viewed by others. I think he's got a taste for life at the very top which he'll struggle to cope without.

I expect he'll get the united job sooner or later, but the same air of invincibility that surrounded both him and them half a decade or so ago is no longer there. There's a little part of me that wants him to go there, because if it doesn't go to plan, and there's every chance it won't, it will make utterly compelling and entertaining viewing that makes the present sideshow at united seem as boring as the football currently on offer.

Glad he never came to mange us.

Haha yeah you can imagine how many Wimbledon were there!

Thats a quite a fair post on Jose, ive said on here that some of his actions really piss me off, like not giving credit where it is due like to Southampton & Bournemouth to name a couple, though he did say Leicester were the better team the other night.

I actually think he may need a break from football maybe take a year or two out, re-charge his batteries & then come back stronger with possibly new ideas.

This season should be turned in to a Hollywood film if we go down, its so unheard of for a team to win their league & then to be as bad as us this season, one thing is for sure, there's never a dull moment being a Chelsea fan!

Those attendances (or lack of) are incredible. Perhaps depressed because many of the teams with the most support were playing away, but well below what we would expect today.

Yeah it was a different game back then, even the so called top five back then had poor gates, Spurs for example got 10/13,000 at times & that was in their peak in 86/87

If the doctor wins her case against the club because of Jose's behavior is it then likely they could sack him without paying a penny to him citing his misconduct? Probably the cheaper solution for Roman.

And yet some look back at that as a halcyon period for football. It was pretty depressing in the main; the game seemed to be in a downward spiral.

I think we look back at football then with fondness because we were all in our teens or early 20s & had freedom & few responsibilities, add to that the laughs & trips to away games with your mates i can see why its looked back on with joy, its probably like Mods & Rockers for example reminiscing about their youth to their son's years later, when in fact they probably had it difficult with money & work & living amongst run down area's still left from the war.

think we did that ,won the league then went down , I could be wrong though :)

You're brave for showing up at this moment, I wouldn't haha

Anyway your fans developed too emotional an attachment to Mou. Employees come and go. The good for the club has to come first. We learned that with Mancini.

Haha there's no point hiding mate, i try to be as honest as possible, i'm too old to bullshit & am quite happy to face the fact we''re shit(again)

Yeah there's no one bigger than the club but its hard not to have an attachment to Jose after what he has won with us & where he took us in his first stint as manager.

I think you'll find preseason was a real issue for them. They started late and it is the view of many observers that that is the cause of their poor season, they were unfit and not match ready from day one and since then they have been in terminal decline.

Back in May we went to Australia, started pre-season late & the players dont seem as fit but i dont think thats the only issue.
