These two are the least of our issues. Both should be in the side full stop. De Bryune tries to play quickly which sometimes means he gives the ball away and Silva is the one who can keep the ball. He was man marked by Flamini last night and that should have mean't someone else had space but we resorted to playing too slow and backwards...cough cough Yaya! We also use our fullbacks to distribute the ball which isn't working, and last night one piece of play in the first half summed this up - Sagna released DeBryune and then proceeded to wander aimlessly into the space Kevin was trying to use - They both literally fell over each other and the Arsenal player stepped in and said 'thanks' Sagna should have made a run away from the space to drag the defender away. Is that poor coaching? or simply Sagna is poor. Same with Kolarov which means whoever plays wide has only one option to pass back to the fullback. No coincidence that Sterling has suddenly stopped taken players on in our system. I think it all stems from the decline of Yaya who in the past collected the ball deep and then dictated the play forward - last night I lost count of the amount of times he collected the ball and gave it back to Mangala or Otamendi for them to try and play it forward, often to the fullbacks who then lost possession. Perhaps if Pep comes we will revert to playing with more structure? As it stands we are playing without using our strengths and therefore, despite having a better team on paper, are often struggling to get results - how many games have we won in the final mins = lucky rather than a strategy to win. Love Manuel for his class but we are treading water right now.

Arsenal were not that good last night and we gifted them space and two goals - first by not closing quickly and the second by a panic pass from Mangala. There is still time to win the league but unless we change tactics it may not happen.

It doesn't have to be that way, Ajax has played with 2 AM's for years. Even as a small team against big European teams and was succesful with it.

I agree with City_Sean that we likely would be ripped apart, too much attackers wanting to go forward, too few defense.

If youre going to work with 2 AM's(or 10's more specificly) and a striker, you would have other options like droping the forward wingers making use of Cm's that can defend the flanks when Fullbacks move up. Something like a 4defenders of which 2 fullbacks on the wings-1cdm-2CM-2Am-1st which would give you a lot of players in the center. Might work, but you wonder how we would play that, do we wait for the Fullbacks to support wasting time on the break or perhaps only use them if we fail to exploit a break? Besides that, what do we do with Sterling and/or Navas then if we drop the forward wingers? I guess that would look something like this:

Plenty of defense, but maybe not enough attack if the Fullbacks arn't good enough for it.

Personally i like assymetric formations myself and might rather opt for using just one winger with 2 Am's where the winger and Am's can roam or switch flank, that gives you an extra man for the defense. That said i practicly never see any team using assymetric formations to overload 1 flank. But it would look something like this

Balance is always difficult with assymetrical formations, but it screws around nicely with opposing symetrical formations often, eitherway the principle tends to be to get superiority on one side or pull the opposing team out of shape so you can be dangerous when quickly switching flank. Here we would attack primarily by the left and if its too closed there the fullback might get space on the right, or vice versa with roaming players at the front who can switch flanks making it difficult for the opposing team to organise the defense. I actually thing the forward part would look nice with Silva in the supporting AM role, KDB in the attacking AM role and Sterling being the supporting or attacking winger.
