I don't usually bother with testimonials but went to that one as I was home on leave from the Navy ,if my memory serves we correct it was against a Stoke team and am pretty Certain Bert Trautmann went in nets for a bit any one else remember who else played

Age is a bleeder for remembering but I vaguely remember big mal coming on in a testimonial and going in nets could it be this one?

If I remember correctly at half time there was an old City/rags v Liverpool/Everton players game, Bert played in that and asked to stay in net for the second half.

Yes you're right, Bert did indeed go in goal, maybe for 30 mins or so? Joe Corrigan came round the perimeter track to watch Bert and a wag shouted "He's still better than you". This was when Joe was having his sticky patch of form before coming good 12 months or so later.

I thought it was City vs All-Stars XI though we did play Stoke in a friendly for some reason a few days before that. I'll see if I can dig out the programme.

It was City v Stoke. You might be thinking of Tony Book's testimonial later that year, where City took on an All-Star XI.

Seem to remember that Bert said that he would play in the second half, "but don't expect miracles from a 51 year old!"

Joe Corrigan sat behind Bert's goal watching the maestro at work, and I bet there was a degree of appreciation from the goalie at the other end, one Gordon Banks.
