I haven't used an Oyster card. How does it work if you go by an indirect route in order to call at pubs? Does it charge you for individual journeys or just for an all day ticket?

You will still need to tap in even though it will show £0.00 charged-it really is a very convenient system, cash IS NOT taken on any transport, a bus journey costs £1.50 regardless of how many stops so there is no need to ask "How much to xx" It's £1.50, be it 1 stop or an entire bus service length! Oh, do not tap out on buses, there's no need.

Used the tube last week and used a contact less debit card. Didn't need to register it before hand.

I think Prestwich_Blue meant with Oyster, you can buy one, top it up and go BUT you can register it so if you lose it you can have it cancelled and any funds on it are transferred onto a new card-does also mean you can be tracked so if you are going to be a naughty boy or girl, police will easily pinpoint your position at any given time!

Be careful not to have your contactless card in same wallet/holder as your Oyster? (charged on both possibe?)

I have credit left of my Oyster from Sunderland final in 2013....better still be on the card :D

Don't know if you can check online but when you arrive in London, you can at an Oyster shop or train station machines. Daily capping levels can be found here https://tfl.gov.uk/fares-and-payments/oyster/using-oyster/price-capping#on-this-page-1 Basically, make sure you have a tenner on it and you'll be fine

Unless you are planning on going to London for a few days oyster is not worth the hassle.

Kids between 0 and 10 can travel for free if with an adult. 11 -15 yr olds need an oyster zip photo card and kids oyster (but you need 1 oyster per person). For each oyster card you need a £3 deposit. Cost per journey varies but is around £4-6 to zone 4.

If you go contactless Visa/MasterCard etc each of you would need a credit/debit card and would end up paying adult prices for all.

By far the best option for you is just normal tickets. If you want to go into London and have a look around, a few beers etc and then go to the match just get a zone 1-4 day travel card for each of you and they are discounted for under 16s. Adult is £12 under 16s are £6 and you can travel anywhere (on and off the tube/bus as much as you want) for the whole day in zone 4 which is the tourist bit and out to Wembley.
