Much as I despise them, I'm pretty sure that the FA and the Government were at the forefront of this. As someone else has said earlier, it was all wrapped up in trying to 'get' the World Cup for 2006. They didn't take part in any publicity for it and got knocked out without a whimper. In fact, their last game was in front of about 5 men and a dog. Evidently all the 659 million were busy that day!
Predictably, the delusional Charlton said the tournament had benefitted from the mere fact that they were there as it meant everyone would be talking about it.
What it did do though was give them a winter break. They had 25 days in the sunshine whilst expending next to no effort in the games. Beckham even got sent off in game 1 so didn't play again. Wenger was furious as it was a very close 3 way battle for the title before they went (with Arsenal and Leeds). Rags got a month in the sun, came back, and won it by 18 points, the biggest ever margin, which does suggest a winter break might not be a bad thing.

To be fair, i dont think they have. It is a pretty easy punt as a journalist to say he is going. However i tend to belive the recent MEN journalists take that suggests that GPC and Charlton dont want to do it and they are still assesing the situation. They could have sacked him off after various results so far and haven't, lots of signs suggest to me they are avoiding making a decision and they know Jose is not going anywhere in the short term. They can let this play out a bit. If they hang on untill the summer they will avoid a lot of the flak as theyu will have given him far more time than any other club would have. I persoanally dont care how well they handle it, we have Pep to look forward to where they will end up with sloppy seconds of Chelsea.
