If we made the semi-finals and go out.. would you class that as success/progress?

Can't see how you would class it as anything other than progress.

If we lost in final media would still say we under achieved.
Scrap that... Even if we won the final we will have under achieved.

It would be huge progress for the mentality of the team. Under Mancini we developed a real inferiority complex in Europe and we looked pretty scarred by the whole experience, to get to the semi's would really put us back in the right direction of thinking we deserve to be up there with the big boys and that we actually can go on and win it in the future. The league has been a disaster, but we know we can win the league so bouncing back from it shouldn't be too hard. In the long term I think the progress in this years CL will do us no end of good.

Good post mate. Totally agree

Success no, progress yes, that shouldn't need to be asked, we've already made progress this season by topping the group and making the quarters.

Semi finalists at present could be Bayern, Barcelona, Wolfsburg and City.

Could just as easily be Benfica, Athletico, Wolsburg and PSG.

Ideally I would wish for Benfica, Athletico, Wolfsburg and City.

I'd be happiest with City and the losers of the other 3 ties.

It would be, but it depends how we are knocked out as to whether I would be positive about it being a success I think.

progress yes but it doesnt make up for the calamitous premier league performances
It is a shame that we have regressed so alarmingly in the league, only a flying finish to even try and get third & also getting to the semi's of the CL could drag it back.

Not sure even that would be enough for Khaldouns end of season speech, last year he went in depth of how extremely disappointed he was with the league campaign, so let's hope we go further in the CL to try and mask over our shocking PL challenge.

The only thing a semi final would reflect is that we didn't draw Barca in the quarters this time round. It isn't progress unless we beat one of the top 2 in Europe and get to the final.

But only 1 team can win the league.. and no team has shown 100% consistency apart from Leicester. Need a bit of perspective here, it's been a freak season for everyone.
If Leicester or Spurs were going to win the league with 90+ points then you might have a point, but the fact that less than 80 points will win the league shows that you didn't even have to be consistent to win it. This squad should have got at least 80 points this season and to not do so is a failing, regardless of the pleasing progress in Europe.

We have never got to the quarters, never mind the semis. Your mind is playing tricks.

It would to some extent depend on the circumstances in which we went out. If we lost tamely to say Wolfsburg it would take the edge off the progress in getting to the SF. Losing a thriller on pens against one of the big 3 would definitely be seen as progress.

Of course it is progress as it is progression on what we have achieved before. A semi final however isn't success, success is winning.

Progress as in the CL yes. Progress as a club possibly as long as we finish top 4. Progress as a team no. Gone backwards the last two years.

Yep, we've gone seriously backwards over the last two years.
Even qualifying for the CL from the league won't hide that.
