Last I checked Martial didn't come from their academy, and the rags spending £57m on a striker didn't stop Rashford coming through either.

I'm guessing some sort of 'whoooosh' is in order.

50m for a kid with 18 senior appearances? What am I missing? He's done nothing.

You don't pay for what players have done, you pay for players who will drive you towards future achievements.

I'd rather spend £50m on a kid with the potential to be world class than spend £6.5m on a fading star who's won a World Cup and a Champions League title.

Last I saw, three signings from Portugal were guarding our goal and helped in keeping clean sheets.

Watched him against Bayern in the first leg & he played well enough - hard to judge much more than that as Bayern dominated the possession so heavily. Looks like he has the physicality & technique to become a very good player, but still a big gamble for someone of that age, still could go either way.

If we had our centre midfield sorted, then I'd say it's a good looking signing, but if we bought him would he really be a starter, or improve the team? For me we're pretty heavily in need of 2 CM's that are currently playing at the level we require (e.g. Gundogan + Pogba), even if Sanches becomes a bit of a beast by 21-22 like Pogba has managed that's still 3 years away so doesn't solve our current issues.

Signing this kid in a couple of years most likely won't be possible, he'll have gone to a world giant by then and once a player is at one of those clubs they don't leave unless the club wants them to. That's why the price is so high, people know this is the chance to get him, so it's whether people are willing to gamble the extra money for their one chance to snap him up.

Hope then that the Pep factor, and us potentially making CL could swing it in our favour. I still think we'd need a third CM after Gundogan and potentially this guy.
