The battle for 4th place

Yes it could easily go wrong but isn't this why we support this team and invest so much time, money and emotion, for these very opportunities? I hope we rest most of the team and give everything on Wednesday. The alternative? Play full strength tomorrow-maybe still lose and pick up injuries and/or leave the team short of energy against Madrid. As I said elsewhere there is no point finishing top 4 if when given the chance to go all the way we don't give ourselves the best possible chance.

Spot on Bert. Lots want to ensure we get top 4, but we are 90 mins (120 + pens) from winning the coveted trophy that top 4 gets you to play in. I still haven't figured that out.

If we win the CL then Pellegrini leaves us as arguably our most successful manager ever regardless of league position.

If we lose in Madrid. or Milan but make the top 4 Pellegrini can leave with his head held high. 3 trophies including a PL title and the club set up well for Pep. A reasonably successful 3 years and his CV enhanced.

If we lose in Madrid, or Milan and don't make the top 4 he's a c****and he has put us right back to where Mark Hughes left us.

Tomorrow is much more important than Wednesday. We'll win the CL sooner rather than later if we keep playing in it. If we fail to qualify then we risk turning into Liverpool or Spurs. Finishing top 4 is as much about future domestic success as winning the CL. 10 years ago given the choice of winning the FA Cup but getting relegated versus just staying up I'd have chosen winning the FA Cup. We're a far more ambitious club these days. Finishing outside the top 4 is unthinkable.

Bit OTT there mate. Don't recall Hughes lifting much silverware with us. Your right about us being more ambitious though, although what the club see as ambitions not might align with what the fans think CL viz PL for example

That's so short sighted. We miss out on CL for next year and lose £40m+ and then don't get the top targets that Pep wants to bring in. It will set us back 12-18 months.

I just cant understand how people dont get it. The ramifications of ending up out of the top 4 would be disastrous for the club. To throw away the stronger possibility of getting a top 4 position on a pipe dream that we may get to and win the final is insanity. we play a weaken team today and Shane Long and co will have a field day.

Sorry for repeating this point but what do you consider our starting 11 should be this afternoon?

I'm just hoping United lose. That would enable me to not have a fit at playing a weak side.

our strongest taking injuries into account of course

The reason I raise this is that I get the feeling many are clambering for our strongest team, but few are prepared to name that team. One or two have pointed out (correctly, IMO) that the strongest team today will inevitably not consist of our strongest players), due to most of them being knackered from Tuesdays exertions.

No matter what team he puts out today, he will get tons of grief (that's par for the course on here), but I hope most will realise that he has a very difficult few games coming up and he has to consider who is best suited to playing which.

I think everyone on here in Peller's position would plumb for taking a team to Madrid on Wed with a view to getting a result, but I also think he is professional enough to pick a team that he thinks will get a result today.

Not easy being a manager of a top team I guess.

You make some good points but let's not have Delph on the left or a midfield two of Nando and Yaya as there's no excuse for either of those things.

Not that simple though Bill, is it.

yes it is. well it is in as much you can at least put the best team available out on the day. there have been many errors from the manager but his stubbonness with playing Bony instead of the kid sticks out as does the unbelievable decision to pitch MDM against Rashford in the Derby. the man is an idiot and I for one can't wait for him to leave, he has cost us so many points its untrue. I get his remit is the CL but the league is still our bread and butter and frankly with the investment we have made to this squad top four and a good CL run isn't asking too much imo, i'd say a bear minimum.
