Wonder how this changes our transfer plans? From what we know he was Pep's ideal left-sided defender? Our only left-sided CB is Mangala. And pep doesn't seem to rate him that much.

The CityTV team had been working on graphics and editing footage in preparation for the announcement, so it's fair to say the club have been caught off-guard by this.
Heard exactly the same. Shit happens.

But not a criticism of you mate but 12 months ago we signed the player considered to be the best CB in Spain. I'm not sure that Laporte has even played for France. And I'm not having a go at Laporte as I've seen little of him, but I'm not worried. Fingers crossed for some better news soon

i'm just not having it that we let this slip through our fingers. city and pep will know that we need this player. I can see a big pay day for bilbao being the game here.

Don't take it to heart

;) apart from anything else I have even less confidence we'll sign Stones...and Mangala and Ota have just not shown they are a good enough partnership to win the prem with..(when Kompany injured) After trying to move Mangala out on loan last season, its clear he'll only still be here in Sept because we couldnt sign au upgrade over the summer...

Have they? Maybe the club had a late change of plan.

Anyhow, as one door closes, another opens. That Bonucci looks OK.

Fair play to the lad for staying loyal to Bilbao.

It most certainly puts serious question marks over his ambition though. There's no way Bilbao are going to compete for major honours and I cannot see any club paying more than his pre-contract valuation. 40+ million Euros is a hell of a lot of money even in today's market.

He's a Basque player who apparently isn't ready to say goodbye yet. I'm not going to come on here and blame him or call him unambitious, he's adored and honored to play in his homeland and after coming off an injury maybe he feels now is not the right time to move on. Good on him.

I would have loved to have him, but we'll be alright. I think we can all agree we will be challenging for more titles than Bilbao, so once we identify our alternative, or spend the money on other positions, let's welcome those who are ready to put on the shirt. We move on.

I can understand why he might not want to move tbh - feels loyalty to his club, wants to play every week, earn more. He'll still only be 25 when his new contract expires, plenty of time for a big move then. Also, us buying young players for lots of money and then being willing to ship them out after a season or two - like Mangala - can't look great.

Of course, he's missing out on Pep and playing for us, so it's a disastrous mistake.

Boom. Well said.
