The next Prime Minister of Britain

well using madchestercity's logic, I shouldn't have even got a vote in the referendum because I voted labour at the last general election,

fwiw, I'm against any re-run of the referendum, it stinks of sour grapes.
on the other hand, if a political party wants to stand on a manifesto of going back into Europe, that's fair enough.

I can see a situation developing and gaining quite a few pairs of legs where a party decided that when elected it won't invoke Article 50, and so we won't actually have left the EU, so no need to try and get back in! Ferrets, skunks, rattlesnakes and politicians! I'd prefer the first three - yer know where yer stand with 'em!

Is there a time limit before article 50 has to be activated?

@malg I agree, but I guess it depends on what kind of deal we get, if we end up having to accept freedom of movement in order to access the single market, some may question why we left in the first place, and may prefer we are full members again, I don't think anyone knows how this will pan out.

Unfortunately the "leader" the leave voters chose decided it's too big a fuck up for him to handle.
You could see it on boris' face that day "can't believe there actually were enough morons willing to believe my lies"

The arrogance and self righteous attitude of the London based 'remainers' knows no bounds...

Oops, looks like dear nige's decided he wants out of this mess as well.
Don't worry, I am sure you will find some arrogant, self righteous, London based remainer who has the balls to step up and deal with the shit caused by brexit. Your lot certainly won't.

For the next PM we have to look further than Brexit and I think only May offers that opportunity. She is the only one who will be able to campaign strongly for leadership without basing her entire campaign on European matters.

I can see the UK joining the EU again - or only half leaving. There was practically no deatil in the brexit campaign - the only thing they were certain of is knowing they wanted out. Give it 6 months and even the torys could say well we tried to leave but it clearly wont work so we are going to call a general election and go into it seeking a mandate to remain although with continuing efforts to reform the EU. They could win a healthy majority on that sort of ticket. I could very much see that happening especially if there will be no deal on EU freedom of movement. That was one of the only solid commitments and i cant see it being delivered.

Why don't you go for it?
You obviously fir the bill down to a tee.

They'd struggle to get a majority of their candidates to campaign on that basis.

I don't disagree with that, but if Leadsom makes the shortlist and performs half decently in the hustings, I wouldn't be surprised if the Tory membership gave her the job.

Article 50 can be activated any time. The referendum is not specifically linked to it.

Ken Clarke is having fun. May is bloody difficult but good. Leadsom says stupid things and Clarke doesn't think she actually wants to leave the EU. Gove is so hawkish he would go to war with three different countries at once. Boris for PM is ridiculous.

It's an 'accidental 'off the air' moment.

You can see the Ken Clarke stuff here http://news.sky.com/story/1721982/watch-ken-clarke-ridicules-tory-candidates

Sky have justified the broadcast as "being in the public interest". I don't think Ken cares :)
Clarke is at the no fucks given point of his illustrious life. He's one of the few Tories I respect as he's a bloody good constituency MP who in that capacity does the jobs as it says on the tin.

Back on topic. Looks like we might have another female PM after the first ballot.

May's lead among the MPs means that she can more or less choose who she wants fight in the membership vote.

Clarke is one of the few Tories I ever respected, dare I say liked, him and Hesseltine always stuck out as being decent sorts, who spoke sense. His words are very telling, he clearly wants May, but it was more anyone bar Gove or Boris, which is understandable from a big europhile.

Still shithouse stuff from Sky, clearly a private chat off camera that should never have aired.

Yep.

They did the same with Brown. Anything to get them more exposure like a 13 year old on Instagram.
