Arsenal: 9.9

City: 9.4

Tackles per game:

City: 19

Arsenal: 18.7

Spurs: 18.7

Pool: 18.6

Fouls per tackle:

Pool: 0.53

Arsenal: 0.53

City: 0.49

Have you got one for bookings per % of possession? Have a feeling that would be interesting.

Yellow cards per foul would be interesting to see but I think that would only highlight poor refereeing. Thought Spurs were lucky not to get 2 or 3 more booking at the weekend and who knows what that could have done. Take the Otamendi booking, a Spurs player made the same challenge seconds later and got nothing, I think Neville pointed it out on commentary.

I'm surprised as we seem to get more cards early on in matches than opposition.
I could be wrong though, only my judgment.

I think this could be statistically proven! I think a higher proportion of our 'tackles' are too easily sanctioned compared to other teams, and we have to spend the next hour of a game hanging fire with the blood and thunder stuff!

Think its been posted before that in the last 2 to 3 seasons we have the most fouls against, the least fouls given to us and considering our usual possession of the ball, something is not right. Think you have to see as others have posted the other team kicks us without punishment yet lots of similar or not as bad challenges by us produces yellow.

Updated. Spurs get almost half the cards per foul we get. Either we are an extremely dirty team, or something else is going on.

See above and original post. More stats added.

for a team like manchester city and pep style of play its shocking that we are made out to be a dirty team with them stats
we are a easy target and the ref is only doing what he has been told by the top brass the others teams can not match us on a even playing field we are that better at playing football its the only way to stop us playing

we have seen in in all of the 7 games this season we are given a yellow card at the first chance the ref its shocking at times that the key players from the other team keep just getting a talking to and nothing more but when we moan to the ref its yellow for talking back

My mind goes back to a game, cannot remember which one when we had a couple of our lads booked early doors. Both for first offences then the ref gave the game away when he booked one of the opposition and pointed out theatrically that he had committed four bad tackles before he took action. We are being undermined by officials.

Wiiiist Hiiiiim this season - the full back, had he been clad in sky blue would have had FOUR yellows by FT.

This is something that bothers me. Spurs for example had twice as many fouls as us but the same number of cards. They seemed to get a little more leeway before bookings than we did though as Marriner is a gutless creep it may just be hometown refereeing. I also thought, biased as I am, that Spurs got away with a little of niggly fouls that didn't produce fouls but stopped the likes of Silva moving the ball quickly, probably down to Marriner again though.

I do think we might have one issue with the way we play, if we have possession for long spells and we're fouled it's usually a physical but not necessarily dangerous attempt to win the ball back. On the other hand if we lose the ball we can be stretched so the likes of Fernandinho, Fernando and Kolarov give away strategic fouls to stop any counter attacks which invariably attract a booking.

It's not much different than the old Allardyce style at Blackburn is it? His players used to make a point of arriving fractionally late and making enough contact to knock people off balance, but play would continue. Spurs' pressing is more aggressive than Liverpool/City, so they make more contact. Fouls may be given, but they're not often bookable offences, and more often play will continue as there's apparently an advantage to do so.

There are obviously some glaring instances - the WHU fullback that's been mentioned, Rooney in the derby - but the number of cards/foul is only important if those decisions are wrong. Most of City's bookings that I've seen have looked fair enough to me; Marriner was lenient, but lenient to both sides.
