Minutes Silence

Yet again we didn't observe the silence. Fans started clapping when the trumpeter finished when that should have marked the start of the minute's silence.

We have started this 'trend' of applauding through minute's silences over the last few years at the Etihad and I don't like it. The end of year silence we have traditionally had has been an applause for the last two years and now yesterday as well.

I don't like the clapping instead of silence either. Getting 50k+ all silent at once is one of the great sights in a stadium IMO.
Also disappointed at many leaving their hats on. That last post though, spine tingling.

Been watching this thread quite closely and didn't really want to comment but obviously am now going to do so . As an ex serving member of the armed forces I want to say that I think that City got it pretty much bang on yesterday . This is the first time I can remember that the club has had a bugler playing and I defy anyone to say that it didn't make the hairs on your neck stand up , absolutely spine tingling . As for whether a silence should commence afterwards , well it all depends on the circumstances as there are no precedence's , I thought it worked great yesterday , silence observed for the bugler and then appreciation showed afterwards , believe me most ex squaddies would have been proud with our showing yesterday , well done City and our great fans

Last post (during which flags should be lowered), silence with heads bowed, first note of reveille heads up flags raised again, after last note of reveille replace headdress.

Great stuff. Couple of split notes but who cares. Reveille played in silence over the PA was spine chilling. The applause was because the bugling was that good.

But poppy money is for British Legion and for British servicemen. There has to be something that brings in supporting non British servicemen when having the ceremony when so many non British players involved

The irony of people moaning about some other people having the freedom of choice to do what they wish when honouring those who gave us the freedom of choice.

It was a beautiful moment but the whole meaning of it all is lost and it's getting worse and worse year upon year. It will be like Christmas soon starting weeks before it actually happens and forced down peoples necks.

If people want to sit, let them fucking sit.

This post has been a bit of a wake up call to me.

Aye, noticed one of the large flags in the South Stand was still up and waving during the bugle.

A read, a bugle and then a minutes silence.
How much is too much?

We're living in a time now where if not everything is done word for word, by the book... then someone will take offence.
I thought Saturday was one of the best tributes across and country and was perfectly observed.
People pay their respects in their own way, if it's not done your way then it doesn't necessarily mean it's wrong.

The Rifleman must have been proud for realising his dream of playing at City but perhaps not in the way he planned;) A bum note at the start but a bugle is not easy to play in any circumstances, let alone in from of over 50000 people and it added to the poignancy of the occasion.

Although you get comments from those who want to exercise the right to sneer and be disrespectful, City fans can be proud of the way we collectively remembered those who suffered and put their heads above the parapets so others could have a go from behind their keyboards.

Funny how so few have anything adverse to say in public but snipe from the safety of the internet.........as is their right.

This is my right

As far as I'm aware the act of remembrance (last post and silence and the reading of the epitaphs) is for all the fallen of any conflict.

Whenever I hear a minute's silence at City I dont spend that minute in an act of remembrance. I spend it thinking "please dont make a noise, please dont make a noise, did I switch my phone off?, please dont make a noise....."

Even if the fans in the stands remain silent there is often noise drifting up from the concourses.

I watched it in a bar in Turkey and the Turkish lads like me thought the whole ocasion was very respectfull and well done .but we seem to atract more moaning minnies now a days that are not happy with anything

I thought the minutes silence was very respectfully done by both sets of fans. The 1 problem I had on Saturday was that there was no mention when the bugler came out to do it, it should have been said over the address system about the minutes silence, so that the fans on the concourse if they wanted to take part in the minutes silence, would have time to get into there places before it took place.

What minute's silence? We never had it.

(Bumped from Poppy thread in off topic section)

... I thought City's attempt on Saturday was over the top (if I can use that phrase in that awful context). It's a football match, not a mini remembrance service. The players lined up, the crowd went quiet ready for a minute's silence, then we had three minutes of prelims - an introduction that began movingly with "At the 11th minute of the 11th hour of the 11th month" but ended "politically" by remembering those serving now (is it not macabre to have remembrance for the living, almost in case they get shot?), then a wreath-laying by two former players, only one of whom served in the armed forces, then Binyon's poem for the fallen, then a full last post which some people then tried to applaud prompting some players to break from the line, and everyone thought "stuff it" and we never actually got the silence. Most telling, I doubt that 1 in 50 supporters were wearing poppies.

I thought the remembrance was impeccable. The bugler was fantastic and fair play to both sets of fans who observed the minutes silence. Brought a tear of sadness in my eyes
