Burnley - Post Match Thread

A shot is not a chance FFS. We created a few chances yesterday but we also had a lot of long distance shots which missed by 5+ yards - which doesn't make it a chance.

Here is the expected goals. You can see that we had 2 big chances, and we scored from both. Other than that, very, very little.

It's been a recurring theme so far this season, dominating possession, looking very good until the final pass, which means we aren't getting loads of chances.

There's been a few exceptions - Middlesbrough and Everton - but the fact we are dominating games without creating many clear goal scoring opportunities will definitely be worrying Pep - he's mentioned it before.

Like Pep said, " I can get them to the final third, then it's up to the players " !

Not at all. I've said we were lucky with the foul. Offsides being wrong are a given in most games and tbh the sun probably played an even bigger factor. Who knows, on a cloudier day the entire series of events could have been different in any manner of ways.

I'm not being contrary, yes the pair of incidents were judged wrongly. But one does not equal the other.
And penalties not given when they should be happen in most games too. I have no idea why you are so hell bent on trying to prove to everyone how unbelievably lucky we were when ultimately the correct decision was arrived at over the course of the piece of play. You are entitled to your (somewhat perverse) opinion though.

I would argue that often we're not getting to the final third quick enough, in the right shape and with the opposition suitably disorganised for us to take advantage.

So while Pep can't finish the chances himself, there's work for him to do especially with the 4 behind the striker.

Exactly.

Just watched the game again, anybody notice how dino was so fast of foot and brain on the winning goal, I think it was amazing how fast the phase of play was, in a chaotic penalty area :-) and of course the finish by Kun.

jesus is it that hard to take the two incidents as individual to each other? Because when you do, the foul was clearly a penalty. People need to stop going "well this happened before it". It doesn't matter. Play continued, then the foul occurred. They aren't the same incident so stop treating them like they were just because it suits.

I'm delighted the ref ballsed up. It may have had zero influence on the overall game, who knows? But stop trying to justify a foul by reaching out to some other thing.

I'll ask again, if we were on the receiving end of that foul, would you not be up in arms, offside or not?
only hypothetical - but no, I don't think I would be up in arms. Wasn't even a marginal offside call (not that that should make a difference but you know) I would think it would be fair to say
'the truth' prevailed?

That's has something to do with 10 men behind the ball. No spzce therefore easier to defend. We need an aerial threat and movement and some accurate long range shooting.

Absolutely.

I didn't think Dinho would even get to the ball, let alone pull it back like that. His acceleration over 2 or 3 yards was amazing.

Converting shots into shots on target has been our problem.
Whether this is because we have a greater number of optimistic punts at goal or our goal attempts are inaccurate I don´t know but stats indicate we had a lot of shots but very few were on target.

Well my 6_0 prediction was wide of the mark glad we came through after a tough start but think pep got his team wrong not enough creativity and composure on the ball. I don't think the midfielders are doing enough defensivley and that is putting a lot of pressure on a weak defence.

After away European game two days later and resting key players again away game . You can't expect too many clear goal scoring opportunities without silva, kdb or Gundogan.

We scored two scrappy goals and created very little over the course of the game. We might get away with resting both, if any of our wingers were on top form but they're clearly struggling at the moment. Without KDB & Silva we struggled for any creativity. We got away with it yesterday, we might not get away with it against a half decent side.

We had 21 shots on goal yesterday, which is more than any team is averaging. Aside from his goals, Aguero alone had three really good attempts to score.

We didn't get away with it yesterday: our performance merited the win that we secured.

Absolutely agree. But we've some very biased posters on here ignoring the clear fact that play did go on and it was a foul. So the ref cocked up twice. At no time does that not make it a penalty., unless you get into hypotecthical arguments about instant replays etc. In the laws of the game yesterday, the ref made two bad calls. One was the offside, so play continued. That's not up for debate, it continued. Then, he makes a second bad call, by not giving the penalty. We were very lucky boys in that instance.

No. We'd have been really unlucky if a penalty had been awarded. FFS.

It's been the same all season. dominant in possession, very few good chances.

The problem isn't converting shots into shots on target, the problem is the chances aren't "big" chances, we're just shooting a lot without creating good opportunities.

A good win seeing last two visits here we lost ugly. Deserved the game being the more positive team.

But why that starting eleven ? The midfield and back four were the main reason for a bad season last year, so why was it the same players as last year. Certain individuals played well it must be said but with that line out we aren't going to play well.. It's not creative, they can't play and pass and they give the ball away which then puts pressure on defence once again just like last season.

Otamendi I feel sorry for, he partners kolorav in defence, looks back and sees bravo, looks to his side and sees an ageing left and right back. The best central defender in the world would worry at that sight. he gets stick for his tackles, but don't judge him until he has good players round him, needs stones back with him on a regular basis, we need an experienced defence partnership before we will be solid at the back not swapping and changing game after game.

We must never play a game and leave out all of our three best creative midfielders as we did yesterday.

Sterling is having a dip in form, has been for a month now, looking a bit like last season , burnley left back had him in his pocket and a couple of times he was put through by yaya only to lose the ball or not create anything. He needs a rest, a pep talk and Sane playing. I think Sane is quicker and will be put through with confidence to have a shot at goal.

Ugly game, shit stand we where in, good win ..

To be clear we have players who deliberately aim the ball at the goal. The ball then either goes between the goal posts or it does not. If it does not it requires zero effort from their defence.
Yesterday being typical of our stats we shot at goal 21 times of which only 5 were on target ie between the goal posts.
Burnley had 10 shots at goal of which 5 were also on target.

I have no idea whether the attempts were good or bad opportunities just that some of our team thought they could score (otherwise why shoot) yet failed to hit the target let alone score on 16 occasions.
