Atletico Madrid 26/03/95

Was covered in the match day programme that season also

Presumably this was one of those hastily arranged friendlies during an International Break because the game was played on a Sunday, and England were hosting Uruguay the following midweek. Scotland were due to play in Russia.

City’s next fixture was a 2-1 defeat at Selhurst Park, just a few months after we’d been stuffed 4-0 in the League Cup at the same venue

Sadly, I attended both games.

Looking at the team line up and I am thinking who the fuck is John Foster, looks him up on wiki, only to find he then moved to my home town club Carlisle Utd and played 7 games, I don't remember him for either team, the poor bastard :/

I have absolutely no recollection whatsoever of this game. Great find with the video, Zin.

I think Foster eventually became a Policeman.
I remember a game at Newcastle (might have been the fluky 2-0 LC victory) when he cleared a couple off the line).
After that, I'm struggling.

Honestly don't remember this fixture, how bizarre?!

Brilliant!

Sure it is the Calderon though

Educated guess, but Atletico’s new stadium (from August 2017) was originally built in 1994 with a smaller capacity of 20,000.
Not exactly sure how it was utilised, (apart from failed Olympic bids), but it might be that City
played there rather than the Calderon?

Interestingly, Atletico were also struggling against relegation, and only survived on the last day of the season.

This hastily arranged friendly highlights the lack of media exposure in the pre internet mid 90s. In fact, to put the game into context, it was only a few weeks after the England fans had rioted in Dublin, and Cantona had attacked the Palace fan
