Darijo Srna

I've read some Croatian fans claiming he's definitely past it now which makes the links odd - certainly 2 or 4 years ago he'd be an excellent addition to any squad. An intelligent modern fullback who is a real leader on the pitch - surely targeted as an acquisition for depth.

No he wasn't. People just pretend he was. He was an average to poor footballer long past his prime who was relegated to cameo roles closing out games. Some of which he didn't do that well.

But to conflate issues and safe face, many claimed he was a great influence in the locker room. Often an euphemism for not good enough on the grass.

Some old players are great for spot duty, Lampard was an example of that. The Chilean pivot Pizzaro was another.

Vierra, for all the love he gets here wasn't one of them. Most old retreads are shells of their old selves, and often look it in a new system playing with new teammates.

Find a young up and comer. Please!

And you're kidding yourself if you think Lampard and Pizarro (seriously?) had more of a positive impact on the club.

Patrick was a good signing for what he brought off the pitch.

And he might turn out to be great. As he was an amazing player. Just not when he was with us.

And if he does become a great manager with us (or even if we look just at what he has given the organization) it will be because we signed him. Thats the point.

Left Back - not playing at the moment - cheeky bid in for Shaw - Right back - Coleman - These are players proven and could easily come into the team and improve us - they also suit Pep's philosophy

My point exactly. People say this enough and begin to believe it. He was a poor player, period. Added zero value on the field.

We neither signed Mancini or Pep as players and they are managers forr us now and in the past. You sign plauers to play. Period.

It's not like he had some history with us, he didn't. He came coz Mancini knew and trusted him. Look, I like the man. Think he is a great Ambassador and all. But he was a shit City player. The primary reason he was signed.

This is a man who's turned down Barcelona, Chelsea and Atletico because he wants to stay at Shaktar, so why would he come to us?

Plus he's going on 35. Not ideal really, and is he really better than Sagna?

He wouldn't be our coach now if we didn't sign him. Period. If you don't want to admit it that is fine...but that was the point.

For fuck sake, how do you know that? Are you suggesting if he became a good enough coach we wouldn't be a great choice for him? I mean how lowly do you rate us? We just signed the most sought after Manager, so clearly we are up there as one of the premium choices for any Manager.

Viera playing for us or not wouldn't have changed that. But again, all of that is redundant talk. The simple point was he was a far past it player when we got him. And we should do that as seldomly as possible. Not more.

Don't need another player I have to pretend is good in the locker room or 'maybe great as a future manager.' What we need are players who can goddamed fucking play!

What happened to you? You used to be sharp as a tack. Playing his final years with us had an impact on his decision to join our coaching team instead of Arsenals (which was on offer). That is just a fact. I don't know why you won't accept that. It is not WHY we signed him...but it is one of the results of signing him.

Lost my edge. Stopped drinking. Need to get back on it.

Is it just me or does absolutely nothing about this transfer add up? A right-back almost 35 years old, who loves his club and is famous for rejecting moves to massive European teams out of loyalty, going to a league where pace is key to play in a team that already has two senior Right-Backs and another coming back from loan in six months.

Can't see us realistically wanting him, it'd be absolutely bizarre.

He's a player I wanted for about five or six years but that was a while ago. He's an absolutely world class player but I don't know if he'd cut it at this stage in his career.

I won't complain if he joins anyway.

He is prob better than Maffeo at this point in time, also he can play RB/LB and RWB - If we get him in Jan for a year I don't see what the issue is.. Also we will lose Zaba and / or Sagna in the summer so makes sense to get "first team cover" in now rather than in the summer.

What lose players who are younger than the player we are bringing in,who may take time to adapt might as well bring Martin de m back or even s. distin

Give over mate.

Although I have reservations, the age difference between our two veteran right backs and Srna isn't of much consequence. Sagna is two years older than Zabaleta and you tell me who looks the younger.
