Donald Trump

Not according to the BBC last night who were reporting the Mexican cancellation before any Trumpy Tweet. I'd expect him and his team to try to make it look like they cancelled first....he never comes second after all. Melania will vouch for that.

The real truth is that you don't conduct international diplomacy via Twitter as the ginger soon to be Billy no Mates will find out if he continues to slag other leaders off on social media.

I agree that you could imagine, based on the evidence of his ego, that if the Mexican President did cancel that he would try and make out that it was in fact the Donald playing hardball, but on this occasion I think that it is likely true(ish).

I can imaging the phone call he referred to including some comments from the Mexican President about toning down the rhetoric and it finishing off with a 'joint' lets not bother then.

If Trump was telling this false I would have thought that Mexico would have quickly put that straight and there are plenty of media outlets that would have been quick to run the story

Perhaps I am wrong

Maybe there is a way he can start identifying immigrants or muslims, maybe by some kind of band they could wear around their arms?

I think that in any dealings with Melania, it would definitely be me who comes first.....

I think your right. There were calls in Mexico not to go. After his announcement the wall goes up he knew it would be impossible for the Mexicans to go and took a hussy fit and got in first to make him look tough rather than stood up.

Mexico made a **** of it, if they didn't they would have called him out by simply time lining each communication .

They didn't for a reason and that reason is Trump trumped them.

The USA buy $60 billion more goods from Mexico than Mexico buys in from the USA,they could pay for the wall and still have a $47 billion dollar profit, in one year
To spend on whatever Mexico spends its money on

Great trading opportunity for Mexico to market its goods elsewhere - forge new trading alliances, get better trade deals. I a protectionist Trump turns 20% of that $60bn into a tax on goods from Mexico to the US then Mexico makes less profit anyway. Unless the just up prices to cover the duty thus making the payment for the wall come from American pockets.

This is all just bluff so Donald can get out of the promise and blame it on Mexico

I've been doing a brief dig on this just now. Mexico's exports to the U.S. are lead by 90bn on cars and vehicles. Now if Trump closes the border and levies the hell out of the manufacturers, he'll force them into the US. That 90bn swing is absolutely huge and he's clearly banking on that.

You do realise that things cost money to produce right?

Ah see, that's what you call a 'fact'. 'Facts' are so 2015. We now live in a world of alternative facts and things don't cost money to produce unless President Trump says they do (and he reserves the right to change this at any time, as many times as he wants). Anything else is a 'false fact'.

Those manufacturers are largely US corporations that set up plants in Mexico for various reasons, including cheaper labour and the fact that Mexico has trade deals with many more countries than the US. Obviously the largest market is the US but forcing them to relocate would not only push up costs but reduce other export opportunities both due to the higher costs and fewer trade deals with other countries. In other words these US corporations would experience a huge reduction in profitability if it happened, along with a huge price hike for the consumer who would therefore buy less. The fact that he's stuffed his cabinet with business leaders who all have a vested interest in corporate America would suggest it's not going to happen any time soon.

What is more likely is that Trump will invoke alternative facts to say he's got his way whereas back in the real world nothing will have changed. Obviously anyone who reports reality would be declared as liars peddling fake news.

I do love a bit of snark!
I heard he didn't say that, and even if he did say it, he didn't say it.

It actually tells you the opposite, and he's being quite open about this.

They are going to get major tax incentives to re-locate within their border and trade from within the USA. Now if you can buy a Ford for 20K or an equivalent Subaru for 30K, most people buy the cheaper one, right? Because in essence that's what is about to happen. Now think that Ford can make that car for 8K cheaper than if made in Mexico due to tax incentives on labour and by making parts in the US etc. You can make the same profit without improving revenues, and most companies will snap your hand off for that deal.

I am, of course speaking very broadly in the above example, but it's what the aim is here. And we're talking about 90bn and a f**kton of bargaining power.

I can feel a UK Mexico free trade deal coming on.
