There's the FIFA Film documentary about the 74 World Cup on now. These old FIFA movies are really odd. More "arthouse" style movies the football shown is out of synch with the sound track - lots of slow mo's stuff - its like showing football to somebody who knows its there but has never been arsed to watch it. The odd thing is when they did come to the game after watching this they would be none the wiser as to whats going on.

Anorak time - if you watch that film of the 74 world cup and Holland in particular you'll notice the Dutch playing in an orange adidas shirt with the 3 stripes down the sleeve

except for Cruyff who refused to wear it in a row about sponsorship - if you look closely you'll see Cruyff's shirt only has the 2 stripes

He's made out to be some upstanding model of integrity thanks to that when in reality he'd been silly enough when blinded by cash to sign a deal with puma that prohibited him from wearing a kit made by any other sports brand and was so worried about getting docked by puma that he threatened to pull out of his countries world cup squad. Imagine one of ours did that now?

They seem to be done as the official ones by FIFA so are really anodyne and avoid any controversial comments which makes them really literal, and in that boring. It would be better if they just re-ran the games as done at the time by the Beeb or whoever, but this generic inoffensive presentation isn't my cup of tea.

I have seen a few of them over the years and they seem to be almost as much to do with football as any Bond film is FFS. Really annoying coz the moment they get anything like interesting you are suddenly in the office of Sir Stanley Rous or watching somebody coming to the match waving a flag - anodyne in the extreme

Now are showing Pele and the dictators - Brazil and Argentina - there is Real in the early 60's with Di Stefano and Puskas, Cruyff's total football Holland, Pep's tikka takka Barca and now us but tell you what its bringing memories flooding back in their time in their place Brasil 1970 were fucking beautiful - the football - the attitude to football - the samba style is so engaging. What is interesting is that Mexico 1970 was the first World Cup where it was staring to be beamed around the world live so this is probably the last time players had the chance to express themselves and enjoy a tournament without the media pressure that was about to overtake them. Looking at the footage and seeing the interviews I think that is something that began to encroach after the 70 world cup
