Media persecution of Raheem Sterling

BBC are relentless in their Raheem or Rashford discussion , again today talking about why rashford should start ahead of him

Martin Keown said on the BBC World Cup pod that Sterling was irreplaceable in the team. He’s the only one who can pick up the ball from
the back 3 and move the ball forwards rather than sideways. We were worse without him.

He really is struggling with the concept of this thread.

@Tom_mcfc

Please take note and stick to discussing the lads mistreatment at the hands of the press,as has been requested several times previous.

Not really, I come on here and challenge people when they comment on his performance. Many do it, being positive or negative yet I’m the only one who gets flack for it. Not surprising the hypocrisy in the thread though. It goes many ways.

spot on in every game that Sterling has been taken of England have looked void of any attacking ideas......

I don't see how it would even be possible for him to replicate anything like his club form in this England team. Of course he can play better than he has done but you look at the players around him and the way they are set up and there is a pretty low ceiling on how any of the England front players are going to be able to perform imo - short of going on some kind of Maradona-esque run and taking on an entire defence. Add to that the unnecessary pressure put on him in particular, due to the extra levels of scrutiny that are ONLY put on him and you are only going to get what we are currently seeing - a player trying his best and doing reasonably well in a difficult role in the team but looking short on confidence at times. The only way he is likely to turn this around is to hit one in from 30 yards but then he tried that a couple of times the other night and the shots were blocked which resulted in the usual response from the sheep. So he can't really win.

Thats a fair point , Sterling in a blue shirt is waiting for a through ball from KDB ,Merlin , Gundogan , Bernardo , Sane , Dinho all players who would walk into the England team , but he has the likes of Alli , Henderson , Dier and Lingard supplying the passes and there is a massive gulf in class , Sterling will probably never produce his club form for England , but there is definite room for improvement , he still isnt beating his man like he does for us , he is taking the easy option , he has to start taking risks and be big enough to take the flack .It appears he is hated by the majority of England fans , so what has he got to lose ?
After Kane he is England's best forward player , the stats prove this conclusively , just a shame some of the neandethals that support our national team cannot see past their Rag/Dipper agenda and the constant brainwashing from the media.

Not only is there a gulf in class between those surrounding Sterling at City and those at England but there is also a difference in kind. Dier is defensive to the point that he's virtually a defender whereas Alli and Lingard like to run onto through balls rather then make them. This leaves Henderson as the creative genius of our midfield .... Rashford might replace Alli or Lingard ( or Kane if any heretics were to dare to consider this!) but no one can do what Raheem does. Southgate recognises this but the media is still trying to appease Outraged of Toxteth who can't forget Raheem's decision to ditch the scousers and come to us. And they can appease Ignorant of Cricklewood who has swallowed the fairy tale that "Rash" brings goals without any idea that he actually brings you 3 goals for every 19 caps!

this is a piece about all players rating by fourfourtwo

7. Raheem Sterling
Sterling’s detractors – of which, for some baffling reason, there seem to be many – would have you believe that the Manchester City forward is having a poor tournament. They will highlight a lack of goals relative to the numbers he has registered this season at club level. While that is a concern and the discrepancy is huge, it doesn’t mean that he has performed badly for England – in fact, it’s quite the opposite. Sterling’s more fundamental work has been typically good. His movement has made him a nuisance – it certainly did in the first half against Colombia – and while Southgate will be keen to see more end product, his wriggling style of play will certainly trouble Sweden at the weekend. He could be performing better, that’s valid, but the suggestion that he’s redundant without goals is really a nonsense.

Kamara somehow managed to get a sterling dig in on sky sports . It wasn’t that major but setting up Sterling to be the fall guy if we don’t win ffs.
