200 cops with criminal convictions

Used to work with someone who had joined the police, whenever an off licence got robbed the bobbies would turn up in a transit van and Chuck loads of beer/wine/spirits into it and include it in the figures with what had actually been stolen then share the spoils, she would have nothing to do with it and couldn’t believe the corruption, she started getting the cold shoulder from her colleagues and left the force.
Some members of the Fire Brigade used to help themselves to undamaged goods in warehouse fires justifying their theft as the owner would claim on the insurance for the goods being fire or water damaged.

as far as I am aware you are not allowed to go bankrupt and remain a Police Officer in some forces so I am surprised that you could be convicted for fraud or burglary and continue on the the force even more so with a drugs offence. It would certainly hamper your advancement.

I understand the wariness comes from exposure to be bought off or bribed - if a criminal found out a cop was in financial trouble then certain offers could be made - I'd rather not have my law officers open to compromise like that to be honest.

This is not true and hasn,t been for a long time, I worked for an organisation that provided loans to police officers police staff and their family members. You would not believe the number that failed to repay loans and ended up bankrupt, these days it also ends up with them in IVA (individual voluntary arrangements) with their creditors.

What percentage of the force is that? And what percentage of the great unwashed have criminal convictions? What I'm suggesting is, is it reasonable to expect the police to have higher standards in their private lives? Or do we just accept that there will be a minority of officers who aren't upstanding members of the community? If they're good at their jobs, is that enough?

You'd be ok being arrested for say an assault, by a cop who themselves had been convicted of the same?

As long as he was a reformed character and went through the correct process, I suppose so

If he’d been done at 18 I don’t see the issue with say being a policeman at 38
