Not heard of this band before but after listening to the first few tracks, I think this could be another album thread find !
how the turns turns tableWell well..
The last time I was on a train was in September on the way to Manchester. I was mostly listening to and writing up my notes for Nick Drake that week, but I think I circled back to this at the same time. I nearly nominated this selection before Local Natives in August, so what do I know?I said this was unhurried, expanding on this it does that thing where there's a nice rhythmic propulsion but it's entirely calm - in that sense it's almost the antithesis of last weeks pick tbh. Creating that forward momentum on mid-tempo tracks so they roll rather than plod is a skill and this lot can do it.
If this was krautrock we'd be talking about motorik, but it's more a Yo La Tengo vibe
it's not car music, it's not plane music, it's (more often) train music
I listened on the treadmill yesterday so maybe it’s running machine music :-)it's not car music, it's not plane music, it's (more often) train music
(Shipman joke and stuff... ;-)
I regret not liking @Black&White&BlueMoon Town nominations more than I do. If you asked me what kind of music I like I would probably describe 90% of what he picks but I guess I'm not as mature as I think I am. I'm like the toddler that sometimes wants a nap and sometimes wants to hit windows with plastic hammers. Something that is kind of balanced and grown up like this nomination makes me want to make racist comments for the sugar rush. Later tonight I will crash and regret my Shipman joke but will learn nothing. Bitterness is a hell of a drug
My mum easily out drinks me because I don't drink. She drinks only on celebratory occasions but shes not shy to celebrate. The poker thing came late in her life so not when when I was younger and to be honest it's a sore point because my brother was invited to the poker games but I never have been. you can be sure I'll be mentioning this at her funeral whenever that should be :)You are definitely one I know that my musical taste will maybe never satisfy, and you were not the one I was thinking was going to really like this either, for full disclosure. To make our interests overlap, I could just say F'it and throw up an R band and we can both take on Foggy and Co. together. Maybe the final round I'll be saving that, but I'm more about the road less traveled in my preferred picks here.
In the meantime, I've just learned to never bluff your mum in a poker game or try to outdrink while doing so. Growing up having someone being able to read you might have been tough. Interesting closer take on "Back Down The Black" too. I would have ended the album on "Stranger", but that's just me being a closing track stickler, but I like your choice too. Thank you for listening, and you made me smile and chuckle at the end of a long workweek.
I'm aware of that, so not exactly news there. I was thinking how I'd get outplayed/outdrank. My mum (I just translated there) could probably outdrink me too, but she had more Irish in her than I do. ;-)My mum easily out drinks me because I don't drink.
Well, just enjoy things while you have them, because as I've learned all too well, once they're gone, there's no coming back...She drinks only on celebratory occasions but shes not shy to celebrate. The poker thing came late in her life so not when when I was younger and to be honest it's a sore point because my brother was invited to the poker games but I never have been. you can be sure I'll be mentioning this at her funeral whenever that should be :)
At this point, I'm just getting an enjoyment out of it all, because I know if you had made the meeting in Manchester, we'd have hit it off brilliantly. At least that's what I tell myself.I feel like our music taste should align and I'm often confused that I don't like your nominations more. I think I'm very contrarian so perhaps if I happened to come across the songs without anyone suggesting them i would take to them - at heart im an awkward pig. As I said this is a fine album and I'm just not a nice enough person to fully appreciate it.
Consider me intrigued...I'll be interested to read how you respond to my next suggestion and see if it has the opposite affect on you ie you're too nice to fully appreciate it. Interestingly one of the things I was going to mention in my next nomination is how I think the back half of the album is all closing songs and that's what makes it great. The album is so good that from the fourth song onwards it is just tracks that most bands would kill for to close their albums
It would be like a jigsaw falling into place, that one, but given little of what I put forth adds up, perhaps 2+2 will equal 5 when the time comes. If you do throw up the R maybe do King of Limbs for maximum damage ;)
True love waits. At this point, I'm just getting an enjoyment out of it all, because I know if you had made the meeting in Manchester, we'd have hit it off brilliantly. At least that's what I tell myself.
Consider this part one of a two part review, with live reaction commentary.
The totally unnecessary countryfication of a perfectly good indie/alt album didn't bother me that much at first listen, but with repeated goes is becoming a bit of an effort. You are Australian ffs, just why!
Don't get me wrong, there is plenty there for me to like. But it is a bit like using your thumbs to peel what you think is a tangerine, only to realise someone has handed you a mangosteen and you are going to have to really push at it for that juicy middle segment which is similar but yet different to what you expected in the first place.
Elements of Wintersleep, Manchester Orchestra and other stuff I like. But there is one very specific, possibly a bit niche album it reminds me of. That I kinda like more because I really want to than I do by default, butna few here would probably like more than I do. For a bit of fun, if anyone happens to coincidentally guess it in one try they can have my next turn!
I think the fact that I want to try so your next pick ends up being Conway Twitty reflects badly on me as a human being.
Australians are big on acoustic/folk (or countryfication as you call it). Must be something to do with the vast open spaces, similar to the interior of the US.Consider this part one of a two part review, with live reaction commentary.

If I was to bet on anyone guessing it, which I wouldn't, you would probably stand a better chance than most.
I would live by my offer come what may!
I think Conway Twitty would count as a pretty bad self-own or whatever it is the young 'uns call it. Tbh I wouldn't know where to start guessing, this lot sound like a lot of different people to me.
