Is Manchester airport the worst in Europe?

No barriers now to get out of the airport and you have to go online to pay before midnight the next day , I tried to sign up for automatic payments as I'm a regular ish visitor , money didn't go out so had to go back online and do it all manually again

I flew out and back into MCR airport last week, Saturday to Saturday.

In the spirit of fairness, i will say that on my last few uses of MCR, i have had pretty trouble free experiences through security and what have you, and coming back into the country has been pretty quick too. In fact at the weekend i went from plane door to train station in about 13 mins, you cannot complain at that. I may have been very lucky with day and time of course, but still it was straightforward.

But what I will say, unfortunately, is that Manchester continues to be one of the consistently most dirty and shittiest little crap airports I visit, and i've been to many. Why? why is it every time i go there's a pile of vomit somewhere? or generally litter everywhere? and why the fuck do i always end up walking through weird little rat runs to get on or off a plane? some back door up some stairs and cutting through back corridors to get to passport control? The whole place just seems totally budget, and "for the year ending March 31, 2025, Manchester Airports Group (MAG) reported a record £1.3 billion in revenue, a 8.4% increase from the previous year, and an operating profit of £263 million"

Makes no sense to me that it's such a crappy cramped and dirty airport, plenty of money around as you point out. One thing I will say is the staff at check-in and security are pretty good and helpful.

With the work that's started in T1 and T3, quite a number of airlines have moved over and this month, will move over to T2. This includes easyjet
One of the major problems with this is that T2 doesn't have enough aircraft stands for the amount of flights it has to serve, so passengers will check in, be told which gate to go to and from there be bused to the plane and have to queue in the Manchester open air to board the plane

Get early flights and it's absolutely fine always sail through security nothing wrong with Mcr Airport food could be a bit cheaper but that's hardly exclusive to Ringway.

It’s shite.
Ceilings are too low and the lighting is something out of a hospital in the 1980s

Also, there is no room. Bars/restraints are packed and not enough seating throughout the terminals in general - on top of that, it’s also very expensive

If I didn’t live round the corner, I’d look for alternatives

Terminal 3 security hall seems to be a lesson in bad design: how to ramp up emotions with low ceilings , cramped spaces , noise and delays . In fact the whole of T3 from the labyrinth march from the station to the bar / shop area is a disgrace.

It's being redeveloped, but whilst this is taking place the walk from security is even further as you have to go via T1

I went via T3 earlier in the year and agree with the 1980's hospital vibe.
Reminds me of a low budget 80's crime series set.

T2 however (to New York recently) was a totally different experience.
This needs to be developed across the whole airport. It's quite stark the contrast with other European airports you visit.

Went through T2 a couple of months ago, and now that it’s finished it’s as good as anywhere. Long walk though to and from gates. A few moving walkways wouldn’t go amiss.

The reason is they have you over a barrel and they know it. If you want to visit friends and relatives living abroad, or get out of the shitty Manchester weather for a few weeks then you have to endure it.

I don't care about the aesthetics of the airport

it was the worst airport in Europe for me for delays, massive queues at security, long queues for immigration and then an hour wait for someone to give you your luggage back

the last 12 months its had none of these things no matter when I travelled, lick of paint needed granted but the main things are at least in order

Am I right in thinking that T1 is about to be closed/demolished? What about T3, which is the worst bit of the airport.

The new T2 is so much better for check in, security and the new wing just opened has lots of shops, eating and seating. And you get your 10000 steps in before you board the plane.

Flew from T2 a couple of weeks ago and the whole experience was fine...it actually feels that it's been built for the traveller with some level of comfort in mind! Aesthetics and feel of it were good. Long walk to the gates but no problem if you don't mind walking, which I don't. Road/footpath system for the whole airport manages to achieve both confusion for the motorist and an absolute shitshow for the pedestrian...usually try to avoid flying from Mcr but if I'm to do it, T2 is easily the best option for me. Friday afternoon flight and sailed quickly through security, about as quick as I've ever had.

From next week there will only be two Terminals….T2 and T3.

T3 departures will check in at what was T1 but still use the same T3 infrastructure ( shops, gates and stands) as before, after clearing Security.

All carriers apart from Ryanair will be in T2.

I've never thought of the low ceilings before, that's a very good point. It really is a poor building.

Flying though there today so will see how the entry-by-T1-fly-out-of-T3 works.

What’s the plan for terminal 1, that big horrible Soviet Union looking car park is not a good look when you first arrive at terminal one departures. Whole thing needs raising to the ground and starting again.
