Gabriel headbutt on Haaland

You'll all be shocked to hear Dermot Gallagher on ref watch say he thinks the ref got it right and a yellow each was pretty fair.

He also claimed it would have been a different scenario had Haaland gone down. Why? The offence is exactly the same so he is effectively admitting play acting turns a yellow into a red. That's a disgraceful and damaging admission for the state of the game.
Absolutely spot on. So if Haaland feigns injury that's perfectly acceptable if it gets the player sent off, according to Gallagher. Never mind, we'll know what to do next time.

I'm glad he wasn't sent off as all the match reports would have been about how Arsenal were cheated.

The whole 'he should have gone down' thing is pretty common now, I hope (ha!) this is making law makers and officiating bodies think about the way the game is reffed and what the fans want to see, which is a bit more integrity.

I remember, some seasons ago now, when Foden got rinsed in the penalty area but somehow stayed up and went on to miss a chance he might easily have put away if not fouled. This was an early example of everyone saying "he would easily have got a pen if he'd gone down". Things have moved on a bit and you hear it more and more now. I just hope someone is taking notice. We'd all love to see less diving and less arsing about but at the same time we want to see violent and aggressive conduct punished. Yesterday's head butt was a clear case of one player crossing the threshold in a very physical whole-match encounter, it absolutely did NOT require play-acting to be a red-card.

(N.B. i'm not under the illusion this was some mighty blow to the nose, rendering Haaland semi conscious etc etc, but this is a football match and some players are pushing themselves to physical and mental limits, you need to absolutely crack down on anything like this, which is completely out of line and outside the remit of the actual game).
Exactly this. It also suggests that a player has to be injured before a red card would be considered, which is absurd. It says to players that it's OK to do this as long as they make sure they dont harm the other player.

It also doesn't explain why virtually every other incident of this type, certainly that I've seen, had resulted in a red card. Did the ref get it wrong on all those other occasions then?

Yeah, of course haaland is going to grapple back if he's getting pulled around by gabriel and saliba. What pisses me off is that by initiating the foul, arsenal are then allowed to escalate it without penalty because "they both have a hold of the shirt". Like no shit, but the foul was initiated by the arsenal defender and by letting it go you're letting them cheat. Just fucking mind numbing how big erl gets officiated.

Yeah I could never hold back my temper like he does but I agree because he is so strong and fast they are allowed to wrestle him every time, there is no ide for us to hit the ball in spaces for haaland because ha never gets allowed to run the opponent all ready have wrestle him down or stands on his back and he gets nothing.

If he didn't see it then why did he book them both?
I think Taylor saw them coming together but I don’t think he saw the forward motion.

It’s very common for a ref to book both players if they came together. It happens every week.

I stand by my point though. Taylor had a good game and let the game flow well. He is a good ref as is Oliver. The rest are so so imo

I'd rather their best defender deservedly missed 3 of the last 5 games though.
Yes. It could affect the whole outcome. What happens if he goes on to set up or score the winning goal, or prevent a goal by the opponents in a match he shouldn't have been playing in?

It's just a shame there was no TV footage for the VAR to refer him too

Letting the game flow isn't a plus point when it should be stopped to award a free kick or book a player. Funny how these otherwise good refs always seem to miss these critical incidents, but then when VAR was first touted it was quoted as being a technology that could pick up the crucial incidents that the ref might have missed. Might not have been those exact words but that was literally how it was promoted.

There was countless times Arsenal players went down very easily and Taylor waved play on. Or a team was breaking and he let the advantage play out.

Thats what I mean by letting a game flow.

Football fans all think the refs hate them. Truth is it’s a very hard gig with players feigning injuries and looking to cheat at every opportunity. Taylor reffed that game very well and it led to an entertaining spectacle.

He missed one incident which VAR should have intervened. But otherwise he was consistent and fair
