27 | Matheus Nunes - 2025/26

Nunes is currently on 3,417 minutes across 42 games. Last season he finished on 2,914 across 43 games. His record was 3,693 minutes across 50 games for Sporting back in 21/22. He’s on track to beat that, in physically more demanding circumstances, so tiredness and possible mistakes are likely in the coming games.

Be quite a turnaround for him if he’s at the World Cup and back in the USA again this summer, maybe even facing Khusanov.

There's still the odd wobble and lack of composure from him and his throw ins are still terrible - Donnarumma should have got rid but I'm sure he'll be told to throw the ball up the pitch next time. That header late on was superb though, with Gabriel just behind him and he's great at pinning the opposition in up the pitch, which led to our first goal.

I have a bad feeling he could end up not as involved as he should with Dalot or Cancelo possibly being picked ahead of him.

Tbh I didn't feel as comfortable with him in this game as I have in many others, but we got through the game okay in the end.

That said - this is impressive! There's obviously more to the fullback role than just these metrics, but it's still brilliant.

His chest down to Cherki for his goal was a brilliant decision. He could have controlled it and delayed the pass or passed sideways/backwards, but he saw Cherki moving into space and deflected the ball perfect weight into his path.
That was his fifth assist in the league, that number seems low to me, but still pretty good for a full back

I can’t say I’ve watched Portugal play football but does he play right back for them or midfield?

If he’s doing it internationally as well then fair play to him, pep and all staff involved in his development.

I thought I’d seen online that he was playing cm for them but could be wrong. Again loads of competition there as well.

Great interview here with Nunes. Brilliant mentality. Should be our first choice right back for years to come.

I can think of at least a couple of additional goals where he's won back possession and quickly transitioned us forward to create a chance. His front-foot defending has by and large been excellent this season

I actually wouldn't swap him for any other RB in the league at the moment.

I didn't think I'd be saying that at the start of the season!

I figured right back would be his best route into the team considering Portugal have Bernardo, Bruno, Neves and Vitinha in midfield.

Another good game. His coverage to sniff out that chance around the back of khusanov and put it out for a corner was peak walker, excellent understanding of the position from somebody relatively new to it. Would have liked to see him get forward more, he's the best supply from the wings we have but seems like tactical instructions that he sits whilst the left back moves forward. Doesnt get the best out of him but not his fault.
