When we first moved to Glossop (from South Yorkshire) as a young lad in 1971, I learned that despite the hype around another local club and it's bad boy absentee superstar, there was a great team in Manchester with players like Colin Bell, Francis Lee, Mike Summerbee.
It was a few years before my first visit to Maine Road and being bitten by the City bug but I'd see these great players on Kick Off and Match of the Day, and it was clear they were brilliant.
Obviously there were other very good players like Alan Oakes, Mike Doyle, Tommy Booth and others.
Others like Frank Carrodus (who turned 77 yesterday - happy birthday, Sir), and Tony Towers came to my attention as they played supporting roles. The United supporting kid next door used to make fun of Tony Towers, but I have only heard good things about him. Like me, Frank Carrodus' has an unusual surname, so he stuck in my consciousness and I saw him play in the early 80s for Birmingham.
I've not heard anything bad about Frank Carrodus either.
One for even older FOCs I suppose (even older than an FOC like me!)...
What are your memories of Frank Carrodus and Tony Towers?
I'm interested, particularly as some Blues say we shouldn't have sold Tony Towers.
