Manchester City
When we first moved to Glossop (from South Yorkshire) as a young lad in 1971, I learned that despite the hype around another local club and it's bad boy absentee superstar, there was a great team in Manchester with players like Colin Bell, Francis Lee, Mike Summerbee.

It was a few years before my first visit to Maine Road and being bitten by the City bug but I'd see these great players on Kick Off and Match of the Day, and it was clear they were brilliant.

Obviously there were other very good players like Alan Oakes, Mike Doyle, Tommy Booth and others.

Others like Frank Carrodus (who turned 77 yesterday - happy birthday, Sir), and Tony Towers came to my attention as they played supporting roles. The United supporting kid next door used to make fun of Tony Towers, but I have only heard good things about him. Like me, Frank Carrodus' has an unusual surname, so he stuck in my consciousness and I saw him play in the early 80s for Birmingham.

I've not heard anything bad about Frank Carrodus either.

One for even older FOCs I suppose (even older than an FOC like me!)...

What are your memories of Frank Carrodus and Tony Towers?

I'm interested, particularly as some Blues say we shouldn't have sold Tony Towers.

Tony looks like he's just taken the first ever selfie!

Tony Towers nickname “Growler” you always need one in you midfield!! Apart from being tough and getting stuck in could play a bit as well!! Frank was a cultured ball playing winger, probably a bit lightweight to go to the top?
Tony was shat on from a great height by Big Malc when Marsh arrived.
Towers had been immense all through that season and guess who got dropped from the team to make way for Marsh with only a few games remaining and we were top of the old 1st Division.. yep Tony T.
We lost the league narrowly to Derby but had Malcolm not been so stubborn, we could have won the league.

I remember when we signed Frank from Altrincham, 3k I believe. Tremendous stamina and I was a little disappointed when he left (for Villa).
Tony Towers lived near my primary school and occasionally you would see him having a kick about in the park with Stan Bowles. He went on to have a great career with Sunderland, winning England caps. Scored a fantastic last minute extra time winner against Coimbra in the CWC quarter final.
I have good memories of both.

I liked Tony Towers and was sorry we let him go. I say I liked him. I have to say that wasn't universal. He got the same stick as Ian Bowyer. We had an elderly element of Maine Road blue (we still have) for whom certain players can do no right. Ian Mellor was another victim. I was really pleased Bowyer won the European Cup and Towers won England caps. But there were city attendees that really only seemed to enjoy assassinating our players particularly home grown.

couldn't agree more, i am certain the match-day thread is where they end up. Booing your own player is not confined to City, and maybe only a small but vociferous thicket, but very unwelcome. Bit like a turd on a lawn
