Elliot Anderson | Opening bid rejected (p189)

Competition? Fight for their place? You need depth having Anderson , Gibbs White, Rodri , Foden, Cherki fighting for postions just makes the team better. We used to have Gundo , Rodri , Kevin , Bernardo fighting for the midfield positions.
Generally, but it's a matter of degree, isn't it?

I also think that you'll typically see better, more relaxed performances, especially from creative players, when they don't feel that one glaring mistake means that they're on the bench for the next game.

Absolutely spot on. We saw last season how fatigued players got by Pep playing the same 11 week in/out

Due to. him having a better overall season, being younger, costing less and with englands future as a possible midfield trio, I would be looking at alex scott over tonalli any day as a 3rd option if we went for anderson amd MGW.

Tonalli has been average to ok all season, bournemouths midfield and attack have had excellent seasons in comparrison
Yep quality player. So is Tonali and Italian

15 goals 4 assists highest goal scoring midfielder in the league yeah that Gibbs white. 7 goals and 8 assists the season before consistently a top performing midfielder

The question I have is where does he fit?

Maresca is going to want two types of 8s. The first is players that can get the ball in tight positions and advance the ball to create or make late runs into the box and score. This is what Gibbs-White is. However, I think we are set there with Phil and Cherki.

The other is going to be a high-energy balancer who can advance the ball but can also break up counter attacks, and allows the other 8 to push higher up the pitch. This isn't Gibbs-White's profile at all, he is very average defensively and doesn't track back a ton.

I'd also Gibbs-White had a very poor first half of the season (Granted the instability probably didn't help) and 12 of those goals came in the second half of the season with 7 coming in the final month, is that sustainable or a purple patch?

If we move on from Reijnders and we can get him at a reasonable price, I think it's worth a roll of the dice, but I wouldn't overpay and would certainly explore other options not just him.

Im not averse to MGW.

Bringing him with Anderson might help Anderson settle better and he is really good friends with Foden, so maybe it helps there.

... Fuck it, go back to 433 with high flying fullbacks rotating with wingers.

Buy Palestra at RB.

Buy Anderson, MGW and Wharton and go all in on the best young english players.

Sell Nico G and Kova.

3 Man Midfield Options are now:
Rodri
Anderson
MGW
Wharton
Foden
Reijnders

Sell Savinho and buy some new high prospect winger (dunno who but he seems destined to go and a replacement winger is a MUST). And probably sell Marmoush as im not sure his profile is necessary with Semenyo already.

3 Man Forward Options are now:
Haaland
Doku
Cherki
Semenyo
New Winger

masresca has employed a 3-2-4-1 or 3-2-3-2 in the past

so if you think a back 3 of khush/guhei/gvardiol
a 2 of rodri & anderson

it means if he decided to ditch wing backs it leaves up 4 spots for nunes, foden, cherki, doku, orielly, riendjders to battle for, adding MGW wouldn't make it overcrowded especially if any was sold.

Peraonally holding midfiled is the priority we have plenty who can sit behind or wide of haaland

unless he’s got another couple of levels I don’t see Anderson being able to replace Rodri, and if Rodri stays, I’m not sure Anderson would be the 8 we are looking for.

100m+ with other positions to address, I need convincing.

Anderson isn’t being bought to replace Rodri, he’s being bought to play with Rodri in a 2.It’s the position that needs addressing more than any other.

If Rodri goes, for me Wharton would be the ideal replacement, he can dictate the tempo & can also play the through balls for Haaland & his lack of goalscoring wouldn't be as relevant
Not even remotely the same player. I think Rodri's physicality and dominance in midfield is so severely underrated. Rodri was running games himself for years and not just through technique but because he could run and dominate players that come near him with strength.

Wharton is a tidy player, can play a pass and link together with other players but a replacement for Rodri he is not.

You think Rodri will stay? I hope so.

I just don't know if Anderson and Rodri works, it would be a big step away from whats gone before.

I don't mind Amderson, but I can't say hand on heart he looks like the level of player we have lost over recent years.

60 million for the best midfielder in the league . England international and 23 years old ???

Mate £60 million gets your a load of shit there’s days .

Brighton want £70 million for Paul van Hecke ffs
"England international" doesn't mean a thing. Just about everybody is an England international these days. It's only been 15 months since Tuchel's first match and he's handed out almost 50 caps already.

That background work has been wrong many times. My point is the risk is big here esp at the money we are talking. My other point is people are are over estimating the quality of some of the names here because they want a shiny new toy. Scott,Wharton and Anderson all being hailed as world beaters. Anderson is the best of them all from what i have seen but hes miles off the finished article and has a huge amount of devloping before he can command a record transfer fee. Two years ago he was a failed winger at newcastle remember. Im not saying hes not the player we should sign or wont become a great player but there has to be some perspective here esp at the money we are talking.

As for the other two, maybe someone should have given tuchel that analysis cos he picked jordan henderson and a mainoo(who has about 8 decent games this year) ahead of both of them. Both of them would be project players here for me.
Totally agree. I didn't think Anderson was that good in the recent England match v Japan, not that anybody was, but I didn't see anything special that jumped out at me. Not for £120 million even given today's inflated prices.
