The Labour Government

I can understand why politicians want to avoid calling it genocide. But by the time it's been declared a genocide by an international court it's too late to stop the genocide. So for any politician who calls it a genocide their standing goes up.

Plenty of discussion on the Middle East thread about it. Even the organisation founded in memory of the Jew who coined and partly defined the term genocide calls it a genocide.

More importantly my post isn’t about whether it is or isn’t a genocide, it’s about what the bloc of Labour members Burnham needs to vote for him to win a leadership election think it is.

Well, yes. I was replying to a post that did query the way the word "genocide" was "bantered around".

If it's an issue in a leadership election I'm not sure how many on the left (or anyone appalled by Israel's war crimes) would not vote for any candidate who refuses to say it's genocide. I'm not averse (on this issue) for voting for the least worst option, and Starmer got off to a terrible start with saying Israel had the right to commit war crimes (withhold water and power) and continues, with making protest either antisemitic or terrorism. I'm not sure what I'd see as a "red line" that means not voting for anybody. That way lies Trump.

Labour going soft on tech companies again...3 months to comply and a threat if they don't etc etc. Just bring in legislation they must adhere to (they already should be doing this anyway) so they've got no latitude.

... and UK national debt is increasing at a rate greater than any country in the world except Botswana.
Its true that the UK national debt is increasing but the rate of change of increase in the national debt has slowed over the last 2 years.

This to me points to 2 things:

  1. The impact of the spending uptick following covid and the subsequent impact of the Russian invasion have started to tail off.
  2. The government has been successful in reigning in spending in some areas and rasing taxes to reduce the borrowing requirements.
There is of course the one elephant in the room and thats Trumps stupid war with Iran. The inflationary impact we probably wont see until much later this year. If they manage to keep spending under control next year they will have done very well, as the odds are stacked against them.

But he "forgot" to say that the comparison is over a period of.....65 years.

A reddit analysis of that CSJ piece suggests:

"CSJ analysis of new HMRC payroll data shows that the number of non-EU migrants on payrolls aged under 25 rose from 82,000 in January 2020 to 370,000 in December 2025 – an increase of 290,000.

Over the same period, the number of UK-national under-25s on payrolls increased by just 11,000."

What the 27:1 ignores is that the UK nationals figure would have been much much higher, and has only increased slightly. 'Increase' is masking a lot of things - if a very high percentage of UK-nationals were employed, it can't increase by a lot, and 'increase' is a more dramatic way to promote the political aims of the publisher.

The locations that the built-in AI sources suggest are CSJ, Telegraph, GBNews. That implies that no-one else has promoted the figures in this way.

The effect of who has remained in work and aged out of the U25 bracket is potentially relevant.
I know I'm a sad fucker - but I'm genuinely always concerned about the legitimacy of 'stats' etc therefore being able to make an informed decision.

Whilst overall I find the last few posts interesting (both ways), I appreciate the above as it properly demonstrates that this specific set of results are fundamentally flawed and should be caveated as such from its data source when publishing (obviously not in their biased interests).........

Keir makes speech that says we have raised half of Europes tech investment.

Effectively announces ban that people didn’t expect. People were only talking about social media not nudes. A first in the world. They get the tech sector to do it quicker than they can introduce legislation and ban it and don’t prescribe how it’s done so can we done best way and according to the tech platform.

Social media ban is on the way after a consultation so it might actual work rather than be ignored by 60% of population and peoples takeaway is booo slow keir in hock to social media giants.

I heard an expert saying that a total ban wasn't the way to do it. Instead there were certain elements of the websites that should be changed (direct messaging etc etc) to be a more effective way to protect kids. This could be done at the 'flick of a switch'.

  1. He hasn't announced a ban ..... he's threatened them with one if they fail to deliver.
  2. Legislation to ban nudes was part of Jess Phillips recommendations when she was safeguarding minister as it '' basically eliminate the problem child sexpoltation''
  1. Australia has banned social media for under 16s .... that still doesn't stop the exchange of images via non social media
  2. It'll take at least 18 months for Age Verification legislation to get through parliament. Kier Starter has given the tech companies 3 month to solve the problem (they managed to do it for access to online porn sites and Sony have introduced for Playstation games if you want to play multiplayer) .
  3. You've probably already seen Trumps response to the proposed legislation ...could imagine the response if we go for a total ban

Can't Labour do anything right in your eyes?

I think it’s a good bit of legislation. Personally I hold my contempt for kiddy fiddlers rather than any government trying to legislate against it.
