“Money saved going on the first team” Let’s be generous and say those 250 people were each on GBP100k a year. That’s GBP25 million saved. Their weekly wage bill is GBP5 million. They saved just over a month’s worth of first team money. Not to be sniffed at, but it’s a one time saving.

The fans have always been vicious and nasty, but through the 70s to the 90s, the team could be watched with, often begrudging, respect. The CL final in Istanbul in 2005 is when they jumped the shark and the whole thing started to disappear up its own arse.

I forget which paper and model, but that definitely happened. Hot Metal was a brilliant sitcom that pretty much flew under the radar, but parodied all this brilliantly and invented the Wobblevision, which I think the Sunday Sport actually tried to do some years later...

That National song is nothing to write home about, but it still wins out for me. I’m always amazed that Springsteen somehow managed to write a song as brilliant as ‘Philadelphia’. I suppose you’re going to strike it lucky once though, if you keep at something for 50 years.

Very true. It might be an unpopular opinion, but I went right off it in the 90s when Fred Elliott was turning it into a cringingly poor comedy with his Foghorn Leghorn schtick and dozy sidekick kid.
