Yes, like those overlapping wheels on their large tanks and half-tracks. A nightmare when the mud freezes on the Russian front.

    The Maginot Line

Britain in WW2 seemed to be always at least one step behind when it came to tank design. Early on in the war there were some truly terrible British tanks (e.g. the Matilda Mk 1 and the Valiant). Probably worst of all was the Covenanter, a tank so bad it never served in combat, even though...

    The Maginot Line

There were stories that the Poles charged against German tanks with cavalry but I am pretty sure this is based on a myth (or German/Russian propaganda). About 10% of the Polish army was on horseback but most of these were mounted infantry, not cavalry. The idea was that mounted infantry could...

    Neil Young

Old Ways is probably regarded as his 'most country' album, but I'm not totally sure how serious it is. It seems to border on parody at times. You probably know all this, but the 1985 Old Ways was released in the aftermath of NY's legal dispute with David Geffen. There was an earlier 1983...

Nice one. Are you including albums like Hitchhiker and Homegrown that were recorded back in the 70s but not released until the last few years?

Priti Vacant has a plan, a deal with migrants plan.

The headline pun is to do with Danegeld, which was a tax that was levied back in Saxon times to pay for an army to fight the raiding Danes (Vikings).

Priti Vacant has a plan, a deal with migrants plan.

The title of that chart appears to be deliberately misleading. There is a huge difference between avoiding tax and evading tax. e.g. Many of us avoid tax quite legally by contributing to a pension scheme and by putting savings and investments into an ISA.

HS2 - Birmingham to Manchester scrapped.

As others have said, the main issue that HS2 addresses is capacity constraints on the WCML. The most capacity-constrained portion of the WCML is between Birmingham and London, so even if HS2 only ever goes as far as the West Midlands it would be a useful thing to have. However, I doubt there...

Etihad Campus, Stadium and Collar Site Development Thread

My suggestion would be to focus on strengthening Metrolink: (1) Add in some bay platforms at the Arena (a bit like Media City at Salford Quays) to increase the number of trams dedicated to serving events at the Etihad campus (2) Underground the tram lines at Merill St (i.e. cut and cover) to...

Etihad Campus, Stadium and Collar Site Development Thread

I'd love to see better use made of the Phillips Park-Ashbury's chord, but it would be a major challenge to introduce local tram-trains onto the segment of the route between Phillips Park Junction and Victoria. The current Victoria-Stalybridge upgrade is all about increasing line speeds (and...

Etihad Campus, Stadium and Collar Site Development Thread

My understanding is that any idea of restoring the Ardwick viaduct in the direction of Piccadilly is effectively scuppered by plans to bring the HS2 service into Piccadilly on that side.

Etihad Campus, Stadium and Collar Site Development Thread

The Eastlands site wasn't a great choice of location for a major stadium as it isn't very close to railway stations with decent capacity. I know Ashbury's is a 15 minute walk or so, but it has short platforms and would struggle to manage match day crowds. The Metrolink service will always...

Mask or no mask when restrictions are lifted? Poll added

BBC say Israel have just re-imposed mask wearing rules only a few days after relaxing them, after a rapid increase in Covid cases.

I think both books and TV adaption are very good. Michael Connolly is very closely involved with the making of the TV series. I heard him say in an interview he's there on set a lot of the time.

    Seasoncard - 2021/22

After seeing on here that others have received an auto-renewal confirmation email, and I had not, I got on the phone this morning to find out what was happening. I spent 50 minutes on the phone on hold waiting for my turn in the queue, then a further 30 minutes talking to an assistant trying to...

No, but they are much more likely to not bother turning up in the first place. e.g. In the 2017 election, only 54% of 18-24s turned out to vote. The figure for the over 65s was a bit over 70%.

Correlation is not causation. i.e., It's pretty well known that older people are more likely to vote Tory than young people. Older people are less likely to have been to University than young people. It is therefore likely that a greater proportion of people without degrees are more likely...
