51 years ago today - Swales became chairman

Swales could’ve been easily removed prior to relegation in 1983. Then share issues and buying by Swales, Boler and others helped him. For years Swales had few shares himself.

51 years ago today - Swales became chairman

Boler wasn’t there when the 1970 takeover happened or when Swales became chairman.

51 years ago today - Swales became chairman

Ian Niven told me Joe Mercer never achieved anything at City… l Not certain I’d trust his views. Oh and Swales was never actually voted out.

51 years ago today - Swales became chairman

Such a complex area. First Swales Out on record came in 1979 but before that he was seen fairly positively. Personally, I have a lot of negativity towards Ian Niven and the others who did the 1970 takeover (that ultimately led to Swales getting power). Their treatment of Mercer right at the...

51 years ago today - Swales became chairman

It was 51 years ago today and was to change our club forever! I’ve posted the memorable video profile Swales did here in the 70s https://gjfootballarchive.com/2024/10/05/51-years-ago-peter-swales-becomes-chairman/

What if...? - The Questions Nobody Asked

It’s a fascinating question. Ultimately would Central have moved into the new stadium in 2003 as the ‘local’ club. Then would they have received the investment? I reposted one of my old articles on Central’s story yesterday: https://gjfootballarchive.com/2024/10/03/manchester-central/

Denis Law and the Backheel - the Facts & Evidence

To counter Utd’s argument that ‘it didn’t matter’ all we need to do is think back to that relegation of ours v Stoke in 1998. Before the game there was hope (not much but some). We had a great win but results elsewhere meant we were down any way. So for us what day/game do we regard as our...

    Breaking records/stats thread

It does and that's why it's a bit bonkers. So it'll be the latest goal in the second half but not necessarily the latest goal in a game if we're following number of minutes played in total. I've no doubt a goal in 7/8/9/10th minute of 2nd half added time will be recorded as latest ever but it's...

Our very own Bluemoon has a breakdown of goalscoring records. For example: https://bluemoon-mcfc.co.uk/History/Players/Goalscorers.aspx

    Breaking records/stats thread

The BBC claimed it was our latest but I thought we'd had later myself. It's a bit of an odd one too because do we count all the added time in both halves? If we do then I guess it was our latest. If we only count added time in second half then why? If you've 7 minutes added each half and someone...

    Arsenal (H) | PL | Post-match Thread

Arsenal fans sang the old 'Where were you' fairly early on yesterday. Here are the attendance facts in case anybody needs them (follow the link): https://gjfootballarchive.com/2024/09/23/where-were-you-2/

    Sir Howard Bernstein R. I. P

It’s the bridge and walkway linking the Etihad with the CFA. The old B of the Bang entrance to stadium. Some stuff on it here: https://www.mancity.com/news/club-news/club-news/2017/april/sir-howard-bernstein-way-unveiled-by-manchester-city

    City’s New Kits

I haven't worked out the full record because we just don't know how often it's happened. It was not always recorded. Many significant games were won in 20s/30s/50s/60s/70s wearing alternative colours at home though.

    City’s New Kits

I'd choose blue for every game home, away or neutral where it's possible to wear blue if it was down to me, as I've said here: https://gjfootballarchive.com/2024/09/17/wearing-alternative-kits-at-home/ I do wonder how we'd all have reacted had City now been wearing red and black stripes as our...

    City’s New Kits

Ah, kits and tradition! An old bugbear of mine. Every kit launch spins things and every fan has a view on what's traditional and what's not. In the 60s they tried to fight anger from fans about the red/black kit being introduced by saying that the club had worn those colours back in the 1880s as...

    Sir Howard Bernstein R. I. P

I'm pretty certain Sir Howard would not have wanted a stand named after him. He does have Sir Howard Bernstein Way named after him, which is a good gesture and one that recognises his significance to the stadium too - the mosaic on the walkway shows the stadium with his name.

Can you help? MCFC documentary series needs fans and film

I thought I'd give this a mention here because this is likely to be something truly special. There's a new documentary series going to be made on City and there are lots of City fans involved in the production. As part of the series the production team and MCFC are looking to find 4 generations...

    Atmosphere 2024/25

Schmeicel has really P*ssed me off! He challenged Richards to get out of the studio and 'experience' what poor old Peter had to experience! If any of you have seen my twitter today I've had a bit of a rant and been met with all that sh*te from rival fans who believe the sh*te Schmeichel and co...

    City’s New Kits

It looks like every decade from 1920s to now we’ve chosen to wear wear a 2nd/3rd/4th/alternative kit at home. Sometimes it’s a merchandise thing; sometimes it’s a manager/coach decision; sometimes it’s a cockup by an away team or a ref suggestion, but it’s happened. Often the colour chosen is...

    City’s New Kits

I know lots have already talked about tradition etc and City ‘not’ wearing blue at home but it’s actually more common than we may think that City have chosen to wear a colour other than blue at home. In fact it seems the only decade it’s not happened in is the 2010s. I explain a bit more here...
