The Album Review Club - Week #216 (page 1412) - Together Alone - Crowded House

Just been recovering (and am now recovered), moving and — next weekend — get to see my elder child graduate from college! Oh, and I have a golf tournament in there too. Also confirmed my first trip to the UK in 4 years for next spring. Retirement is fun; aging less so :)

Obviously that was the clue back when we were posting 10/10 records :)

    President Trump

Well, because regular politicians don’t do silly stuff like that, but some artists do, and there’s this: https://www.pbs.org/newshour/amp/politics/bruce-springsteen-calls-out-the-white-house-and-announces-a-protest-festival

    Fixtures Calendar - 2026/27

@Ric — May I suggest we put this thread on a sticky? It’s fantastic and I find I return to it multiple times during the season, especially for TV fixture estimated release dates (big help to those of us trying to plan travel to the UK) and draw dates. Thanks!

Music Albums - All killer no filler...

This is always tough because variety is the spice of life and so tempo/tone/style changes in a great record are sometimes what make a record great. One person’s filler is another person’s genius. I’d like to think all the records I like best and would rate 10/10 (or even 9/10) have no songs I...

Music Albums - All killer no filler...

I agree, but don’t find Biko at all godawful and think Mother is a bit tough but like Miss Gradenko quite a bit. The first Police record nearly makes the cut save for Be My Girl.

The Album Review Club - Week #216 (page 1412) - Together Alone - Crowded House

Thanks for the best wishes all — I appreciate it! Lots of medical stuff this week and next but I’ll be fine. On another note I’ll likely be asking Ric to change my handle as it will be locationally-inaccurate soon. Any musically-related suggestions? Like “Radiohate” and “Radiodead” maybe? :) :)

The Album Review Club - Week #216 (page 1412) - Together Alone - Crowded House

It’s 3:22 am here and I am prepping for my colonoscopy. Also, I listened to this record a few days ago. The joy level on both remain neck-and-neck. That said, this IS better than Sleep Token. The nice way to say it is that it fails in its mission to make me feel how it wants me to. 3/10.

Pep to leave at the end of the season

Why do you think no England? Meant as an actual question, not a passive-aggressive criticism of your point :).

Pep to leave at the end of the season

I’ve been thinking the same. But, as such, I wonder if such a challenge might be exactly what he needs. To your point, he’d have to adapt in order to be successful on that stage. So what wins out — the man’s ambition, or his stubbornness (meant in a positive way) to holding football to the ideal...

The Album Review Club - Week #216 (page 1412) - Together Alone - Crowded House

Yes. Except the emotional response it provoked in me was revulsion and embarrassment on their behalf for their puerile lyrics and dork-fingered guitar and drums. Similar to how OKC created an emotional response of anger at the artist’s hypocrisy, cynicism and pomposity.

The Album Review Club - Week #216 (page 1412) - Together Alone - Crowded House

Stacey’s Mom is funny and ironic. So it makes me laugh and wince on the protagonist’s behalf. That’s true of lots of songs on that record actually. Songs capture the artist’s feelings or opinions about things and convey them with notes and words. The vaguer the music, the less I know what an...

The Album Review Club - Week #216 (page 1412) - Together Alone - Crowded House

Ummmmm . . . . Horseshit. As to the rest of your post, we’ve established this is “mood music”. IMO it fails in creating the mood it intends. You think it doesn’t. Fair enough.

The Album Review Club - Week #216 (page 1412) - Together Alone - Crowded House

A point is better than no point, and intent is better than no intent, but no point puts pressure on the songs — or if not songs, sounds — to reflect intent. You’ve explained what you think the intent is. And that may be so. But my counter is these song-sounds don’t make me feel how they’re...

The Album Review Club - Week #216 (page 1412) - Together Alone - Crowded House

If I’m gonna be anxious, I want things to be anxious ABOUT. War, what is it good for? But I am reaching the same conclusion as you in re: lack of specificity. Thing is, these guys have been around forever. THEY should be in a place in life where this doesn’t resonate either. Which makes it all...

Then they are going for what Gregorian monks were going for. And therefore, it’s an ambient. Definitionally, ambient records have fewer points to make, or a simpler intent, except for “Another Green World”, because it was (in a pop context) first, at least IMO (others would say it’s “Music For...
